I've seen both the first and third ones you mentioned done to students, so why not to faculty and staff as well? Just because your an "adult employee", does not mean they shouldn't search your car if they have reason to. It does not mean they should not drug test you just because you are an "adult employee". "Adult employees" get tested & searched if needed at alllllllllllllll kinds of other occupations. Why not teachers to??
June 25, 200719 yr I respect the fact that "we" are adults and can spend our monies pretty much anyway we see fit and if you want to participate in that type of lifestyle then I will be the first to say that is your choice. But when you are an instructor in my child's life (and that is a big part of my child's life) then I feel that the right to do drugs as you see fit, goes away. I remember a teacher I had in high school, science I think, that was nicknamed Mr. Cocaine. We could get away with anything during his class and I can say I didn't learn a thing from him. He spent most of the time spaced out at his desk and it was more like study hall than an actual class. I do believe he was fired after I graduated for being arrested for drugs...when I look back we(the students) thought it was funny whenever he was out of it and took full advantage of our "free" time...

While you ask a fair question, my post has nothing to do with the double-standard issue you bring up.

Correct me if I am wrong, and the Guru will know.....police cannot search anyone's car or home without permission, a warrant or reasonable cause. Most of us are told at the time of hire that random drug tests can be done, so I see no problem with that. If a policy is put in place that random drug tests can be done on students, I have no problem with that either.

If a policy is put in place that random drug tests can be done on students, I have no problem with that either. Yes, a warrant is needed unless there is reasonable cause (I think). My questions were in response to the thinking of "I've got nothing to hide." If you fall into the camp, my questions are posed to see how far you will take that line of thinking. "Slippery slope" comes to mind.

Why as an adult should I lose all of the rights guaranteed to me by the bill of rights because of my career choice? If everybody else is willing to give those up at their jobs then I will toss mine into the ring as well. Courts have decided in numerous courtcases that the students don't have some of these rights to protect them against harming themselves abd other students.

While the SC did rule in the Vietnam era that students did not lose all of their Constitutional rights when they walked through the school door, they do not have COMPLETE rights. They upheld that belief today in their ruling on the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" case.
