Yes, They are two different issues and I mixed that up sorry about that...I mean if they did decide one day to test us then OK because I would pass, but I am one to say that without reason I would be a little upset...

I am a teacher and I am fine with being tested, but having somebody bust in with involuntary searches are two totally different things. I was offended when I read this thread, because too many people already blame the worlds problems on teachers and now evidently we contribute to the drug problem in America. If this is happening where is my cut? Lord, knows I need the money.

You honestly think there aren't teachers doing drugs and yes dealing? There are drugs and illegal activity in every walk of life. Teachers included.

Some Students do drugs. Some Teachers do drugs. Treat them both the same. If you "raid" the students, then "raid" the teachers. By the way, I have NEVER heard of a student or teacher being "raided".

I am sure there are teachers involved in these matters, but to imply that teachers perpetuate the drug problems across America is a pretty bold statement. That is what I got from the original post. Teachers get into their trade to help kids, and while it might be hard for some of you to believe most teachers are really trying hard day in and day out to do just that. Should we raid every sheriffs station across the country because you have one crooked cop? Or raid wherever it is you work because of one bad employee. It just seems if your going to do it in one work places you should do them in all work places regardless of their affiliation with children.

Speaking strictly as a Devil's Advocate here BUT drug testing of students without cause has been upheld by the courts. Why should teachers be above that.

Again, I am speaking purely as a Devil's Advocate. If students are not legally entitled to privacy at school (as I believe courts have ruled) they why are teachers. If I am wrong in my thinking that a student can have their belongings and locker searched without cause then I stand corrected.

The only school employees that should be subject to drug testing are those who's jobs endanger themselves or others. I'm thinking of bus drivers, some vocational teachers, practical lab teachers.

You are correct to a degree with the privacy issues set for by the TLO court case but I just don't think teachers should be accused of pushing along the drug trade. We get enough scrutiny without people making up crimes that we supposedly are committing.

What if a Social Studies teacher came in tripping on acid???? Wouldn't he/she be endangering themselves & others??

 

You don't know if a teacher would do that or not but drug testing them to make sure they don't do that kind of stuff could help, don't you think?

We (and by we I mean adults in general) have sent a message to students that if they have done nothing wrong they have nothing to worry about drug testing. Are we now (and again I mean adults in general) not being somewhat hypocritical when we say even though we have done nothing wrong we should not be tested.
