IMO,I sense a little animosity between CC and BB and am thinking that is where the rubber or "turf" meets the road and "root" cause of the friction...

I think that this all started two years ago when Brossart used the CC Middle School to host the 10th Region All "A" Classic Boys Basketball Tournament during the week and displaced several CCMS teams who had practices in progress and scheduled and were not informed by the CCMS administration that BB had contracted for use of the facility starting at 5:30pm and that the CCMS teams would have to give up the floor early.

 

This really brought an outcry from the Campbell County faithful that Brossart was receiving preferential treatment and that the CC admin was selling out their own programs to Brossart, even though that agreement had been reached months prior to the playing of the games.

 

This could have been easily avoided had the CC admin communicated properly with their in-house teams and not waited until the day of the event to notify the practicing team/s that Brossart had the floor and they would have to get off.

 

It was just after this episode that Brossart announced that we were starting a football program and a clamor went up that we would not be permitted to use Bob Miller Stadium. The admin had to support the groundswell of opinion against Brossart and it would have been very unpopular at the time for School Board members, up for re-election, to come out in favor of Brossart further using their facilities.

 

I also believe, rightly or wrongly, that this had an impact on Joe Roberts' leaving CCHS.

Having lights is not an issue (see Cov. Cath. - plenty of wins without having lights). Goalposts and stands can be purchased with little cost (also can be removable). Setting up concessions and restrooms again can be done….can be very creative ways of accomplishing this.

 

Using the NCC/Newport agreement, as a reference, is not something you want to do. The Wildcat family has not been happy with this situation for years. Prior to the new turf at Newport Stadium, NCC had a great deal when using the field (basically supplying the straw at the end of the year), as Newport had to use their staff and resources to take care of the field before and after every event at the field. NCC had it made…of course the Breds faithful liked it! Newport was able to finally get serious compensation for NCC using the field when they put in the turf. However when NCC found out that it would actually cost them some money they went searching for a better deal….ie, they went and talked to Highlands, Beechwood, and Dixie. In the end they realized the Newport deal would be the best not because of cost (because they were going to have to pay, real money, for using a field no matter where they played) rather because of location.

 

I think the biggest thing with this situation between BBHS and CCHS is they past 10 years or so there has been bad blood created between the two programs by the fans from both schools. All of sudden now the school that consistently is ripping CCHS athletics (see BSMustangs blog pages, BGP for that matter) wants to partner up. If the shoe was on the other foot I am certain the Mustang faithful would be against this venture as the Camel faithful seem to be now.

 

I'll wholeheartedly agree with you on the points on lights, etc.; since that's exactly what I said in MY post, although it may be a little more difficult than you suggest!! Mustang's suggestion that the best solution may be working together to "turf" the field, which may benefit everyone, but certainly won't appease many on here. Can't speak to the NCC deal, but I don't think anyone from BB expects anything for free, and is willing to pay their fair share if a deal were worked out??

 

I'm going to have to take exception to your slams against the Mustang faithful?? I read BMustangs, BGP and the NKY Sports blogs faithfully and have seen nothing on there from anyone at Brossart "ripping" Campbell athletics?? Examples?? Given the success of Mustang sport's teams recently vs. the Camels, this should have been the time to beat our chests, or gloat if we wanted to; but that's simply not been the case, and won't be!! On the contrary, I've seen articles, especially on BMustangs applauding CC team's exploits, especially recently in football. You've had our BB announcer do internet braodcasts of your games, and I've heard your playoff scores announced at Mustang hoops games. I'm still confounded about the slights perceived by the Camel faithful--Get over it and set your sights higher than obsessing about a little single A school you should be dominating in everything???? We've both enjoyed a good working relationship with the middle school gym and track, so I'm not sure why this seems to stick in everyone's craw so much??

I'm tired of defending the BB football folks (who don't need it) to closed minded, so-called experts, who incesantly quote "facts", "costs", and other "inside information" that they have no clue about; and totally disregard what others post, while just making up things to be upset about??

 

I feel certain that if Anthony Strong himself got on here and said it was a great deal for the school system; that you & your compatriots would claim you knew the numbers better than he does.

I asked an fellow retiree who does have a huge say on this matter currently and his comment was no. The word is the youth programs are growing, the middle school age program is growing along with the varsity program and the last thing needed is a horrible field in post season play. Also, the varsity coach will have a lot of say about this and his take is no. Lastly, it seems someone from Brossart athletics told other schools, specifically Beechwood it would be playing at CCMS. The new CC youth league is a middle school league.

The little bit of profit made vs. the damage done by even one extra varsity game is not a wise investment by the CC administration. I understand that renting the field is somewhere in the quoted range of $1,500.00.

 

Comparing that to an average CC profit of $25,000 (5,000 tickets x $5.00) on a Friday night, the $1,500.00 payment is not worth the hassle or wear & tear on the surface.

 

Once again, though, this decision by the Superintendent's office cannot be based on economics. It must be made based on player safety. The field cannot sustain more usage. It's already @ 200% capacity with a rigourous Jr. League, Red Devil :devil: , CC Band, and CC Freshman, JV, & Varsity game schedule for 2007.

They need to ask people who know if the field could handle it or not and not the people on here, as I said earlier the field looks better than ever. If and I emphasise IF BB ends up at Miller Stadium, I'm guessing that's what the CC administration has been doing. Sometimes if you open your mind, both sides can benefit in a situation like this!!

I am thinking if the community can eventually pull together on this issue and end the "turf" wars, the best outcome for both schools would be a Bob Miller Stadium with Turf. That way, CC and BB can play as much football at Bob Miller as the time of day would allow!

 

For BB to find property and to build a stadium w/ parking, a track, lighting, scoreboard etc., the final cost would be over $1 million easily. If the two schools could pull their resouces, raising $750,000 or so would be the ticket. Can two schools dual utilize a field and stadium? Highlands has just three home games this year and not all are scheduled for Friday night. So, my answer to my question is, "yes." Even if CC had 5 home games scheduled this year, dual utilization should not be an obstacle. (Unless the Red Devils play on Saturday nights or Friday nights when the camels are out of town.) Of course the color scheme for the new turf would be another war and thread down the road!

 

Sometimes you just have to ask yourself, " What would Bob do?" I think most of us who knew coach Miller already know the answer!

If it all about money, just a side note. Campbell County Band Parents Association controls the concessions to Bob Miller Stadium. Before we open the doors about extra events, may want to see if they are willing to open the concession to the extra games or if they are willing to share in the potential monies that could be generated.

I really think that if Campbell County were smart, they would embrace Brossart's need for a home field and join forces between the two schools and the community in general to fund the installation of artificial turf at Bob Miller Stadium. That way the band, Red Devils, underclass programs, Brossart, and the Camels would all benefit. Campbell County could charge rent as does Newport Stadium to NCC, and they would get 100% of the concessions from all tenants.

 

Using the newly installed Bermuda Grass/injected rubber as an excuse seems shortsighted. Let's face it, five or ten years from now Bob Miller Stadium is going to have turf. Why not sooner than later???

 

I won't address the St. Joe/St. Mary comments. Brossart has a fine working relationship with both schools (as well as Campbell County) and BB has sunk countless thousands of dollars in improviing and maintaining the St. Mary Baseball field.

 

Only recently has NCC developed their own baseball facility. Like us they rent a football facility, play their soccer games at Pendery, and have their own gym. Holy Cross is in the same boat.

 

I do know that we were seriously looking at some property in the county with the thoughts of developing a sports complex there. Don't know how that came out.

 

I guess that if I were on the side of the issue that has all of their facilities provided by tax dollars, it might be easier for me to look at the private school next door and tell them that in addition to paying tuitions (by choice) to send their kids there, they also need to ante up and build a place for all of their athletic teams to perform as well.

Does anyone know how to reach him still? With everything that was going on in this district at the time, I think he would have had more concerns. If anyone remebers and it was a long, long time ago now, he was pubicly critized for recommending the installation of the crumb rubber to Bob Miller. When it was recommended that the school install Bermuda grass, again more critizem. End result as proven from other posts, the field is looking great, there is more activity on it then there has been in a long time. He worked with the former varsity football coach and the current coach to start a youth football program that delt with only elementary students that attended Campbell County Schools, that is still under fire today, but what do we have, over 100 students out there learning the game of football and having fun.

What we all need to remember is that groups can request to use the facility. If Brossart did that, then they should at least know if they are permitted to use the site before submitting a complete schedule and allow this to even be talked about that they may play games at Bob Miller. The point is true, would it not be a great testimony if every organization that has any connection to that stadium sit down and put a plan together to restructure and remodel Bob Miller Stadium. Why move something that is perfect for the community? Yes, it would be nice to have a field at Campbell County High School, but right in the heart of Alexandria, a perfect gathering place. The real question is this, would everyone be willing to drop the ego level some and realize that it takes more than one person to put a project like this together, but it can be done.

The concession stand isn't open by the band parents for the JV games now. The parents bring stuff and sell it outside the concession stand if at all. As for that being a reason for Joe's leaving nothing can be further from the truth. He left for a number of reasons but that wasn't one of them. Hopefully the new principal will be more athletically inclined and this will help the entire athletic program at the high school.
