I remember the days when $5 would fill up my car! I certainly hope you don't seriously believe the reason you gave for the price of gas being so high do you?

The greed that causes high gas prices is the greed of American consumers who refuse to lessen their demand. Americans need look no further than their mirrors to see who's responsible.

I've griped for years on record (gas threads on this forum) about the hosing we're getting from the government.

 

In 2005 income on gas taxes was 71 billion dollars for the government.

Gas profits for oil companies was 61 billion.

 

Government has no overhead at all! None! Just raking it in. What's up with that? Anyone?

We discussed this ad nauseum in the previous thread in GD. The sad part is that the large majority of the American public simply do not understand the concepts of supply and demand. We want someone to blame, and by God we are going to find them!

When the price of gasoline goes up, the excise tax stays the same because it is based on per gallon, not price. So if the feds were making $71 billlion when gas was $3/gallon, they were probably making $71 billion when it was $2 a gallon. Also, virtually all of the gasoline excise tax goes into the highway trust fund to pay for all those orange barrels.

you mean like the roads and the safety vehicles that patrol those roads. I forgot that those were purchased with private funds.

I could fill up the 21 gallon tank on my LTD for $10. At 13 mpg, thats 3.7 cents per mile. Now 30 years later, I'm paying 11.4 cents per mile.
