In a 3 games series Ryle will be able to compete with anyone. I believe the State Title will be coming back to union this year! Good Luck Raiders!!

Based off the fact that there was a fairly close play at the plate, I'm going to say he did not rule obstruction and protect Pop to 3rd base. For a close play like that , it would be natural to assume that any obstruction could cause him to be out at home and ,thus, rule him safe.

If it was the play as you described, my guess is he ruled that it was a play on the ball by the defender.

Had no idea whether the play at the plate was close or not, just providing info for those that might think that he "automatically" gets home. I'm with you, if he dove and even if he was in the process of getting up from a dive I don't think it is obstruction. At this point though I'm just guessing as I have no idea whatsoever as to what happened......just going off other's comments. I will say this....95% of the time the men in blue get it right. (If it was 100% they sure wouldn't be doing HS games!)

Agreed. If 3B was making a legitimate play on the ball he cannot be expected to disappear immediately upon missing the ball. It comes down to the umpire's judgement as to what was reasonable for him to clear way of the runner's path. If the umpire felt the delay was not reasonable, he would have waited for the conclusion of the play (delayed dead ball) to see what transpired and made his call from there. Given the closeness of the plate at the plate (it was darn close), any delay experienced by the runner from obstruction would have resulted in him being awarded home.

I didn't see the runner come around third as I was watching the ball, but their was a rundown situation and when the the third basemen went to cover the bag he slipped and landed in front of the bag on the home plate side. The ball skipped into the outfield and the left fielder threw home and got the runner at the plate. That was the situation for those who didn't see it.

Only the sectional is a 3 game series .Once you get to Applebee's it is 1 and out .

Ryle doesnt have the quality of pitching to win it all. They do have alot of pitchers but they cant compete with the pitching of dunbar or other teams in the state. I'll be routing for the Raiders to bring home the state title but i just dont see it happening. Good luck Radiers, keep the great season going.

Habib is correct . After talking to another person today, I believe the scenario was as follows:

Runners on 2nd and 3rd (or 1st and 3rd) - squeeze play is on - pitchout - runner on 3rd is retreating to 3rd base when the catcher throws the ball past Vince Murray into LF. Popham was heading to 2nd on the squeeze and then towards third when the ball went to LF.

If this is the case AND if Vince Murray, intentionally or unintentionally, impeded the progress of Pop, its obstruction.

Again, even on this play, I didn't watch Pop so I have no clue as to what happened while he was running.

Myself and another who have played ball our whole life both agreed it was obstruction on the 3rd baseman. Not that we are experts but there was plenty of time for Murray to get out of the way of the runner.

As for Ryle being able to play w/anyone in the state, I hope so and will be cheering for them to do well but as someone said, they do not have the pitching to beat some of the other teams. I can tell you from experience, Dunbar is loaded!

Good luck to both the Raider teams as we know you will represent our region well!

Yes, you're right, that was the play. I was thinking it was a ground ball single past a diving 3Bman. And indeed if there was any contact by the 2B runner with third baseman (assuming runner himself did not cause contact by going out of basepath) it should have been obstruction, as 3Bman was no longer part of the play once ball was thrown past him.

Odd, but no one has complained about the call at the plate on that one. Even being a Ryle fan through and through, I thought runner may have been safe, though I certainly didn't have the best angle. At a minimum, it was pretty darn close. Or maybe not, since no one has voiced an objection. :D

It was very close. I didn't even think there was going to be a play and I made no effort to stand up and watch. Very surprised that was an out.

The Raiders have won 32 games with the pitching they have, no one on the team seems to complain about our pitching. Those who followed the Raiders all year know how they get it done.

Have they played the best in the state?

Has Somerset?

I wasnt comparing them just to somerset but to the road they will have to the state game compared to the teams they have played the regular season.

They may have played some good teams but the only win (wins) I see was Danville. They lost to Boyle, Danville, Dunbar, Tates Creek, Henry Clay so the Raiders will be fine. The only common opponent was Tates Creek where Ryle was down 5-3 in the 4th when they got rained out, and Somerset lost to TC 8 -7. I like our chances.
