Farva Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Alright everyone, here's the deal. Currently I have an old desktop and an old laptop. Both of them have had some issues over their time, which culminated when they both stopped working during finals week this past semester. So, it's time to go in a new direction. I want something that is versatile enough to replace both of my current machines. Something that has enough speed and capacity for me to be able to watch movies, play music, and play computer games with, but also something that is portable, and that I can take with me to class to take notes. Some of the early candidates that I have looked at are: Toshiba Satelite P105-S9337 and Dell XPS M1710 I know there are people on here that are better versed in computers than I, so I would like some opinions on these machines, and maybe some other suggestions. Thanks.
HammerTime Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Viao is what I have and it has been awesome for me.
BoondockSaint Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Dell is always a great laptop, I have an Inspiron 9300 and love it. There are some other good brands out there but personally I would never get a Toshiba laptop. I have a few friends who have had one and none of them have to happy.
BigBlueFreak Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Go with the XPS. I love mine... I have an XPS also, I'd recomend it.
bellalumni40 Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 I have an Inspiron 6000 and have really had a good experience with it until the hard drive went out on it the other day. Now I am without everything that was on my computer at the time. Microsoft Office and all the files pictures and everything. Now I am being charged for the new hard drive which they didnt tell me about that part of it on the phone. I found out when I got the bill in the mail. Dell's customer service is questionable. It is good for some, bad for others, and you are bound to have a problem at some point. I hear Mac's are great.
Sportz Addict Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 I don't understand spending 2 G's for a notebook, when the 700 dollar ones do about the same thing.
HHSDad Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 The XPS is a great laptop, but do you really need a $2500 laptop? I'd go with the Dell Inspiron E1705. You can get it for about $500 off right now. Priced after discount is $1099.
swamprat Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 I've got nothing against Dells, but I got a new Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147 late last year and I love it. Especially because it has a full keyboard. I've always used Toshiba. This is my 4th one (my first Satellite had a Pentium 133 in it). None have let me down, yet and all, but the first one, are still in use. I still have the first one, which still powers up and I can surf the web with it, albeit slowly. As far as what you should pay, it depends on what you are using it for. Believe me, I couldn't do what I do with a $700 laptop.

swamprat Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Oh, buy the way, get a fairly large external drive (at least as big as the hard drive in your computer) with what ever you get and back up your hard drive at least once a week. It will add a couple of hundred to the cost, but it will save you major headaches in the future.
spe690 Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Go with the Inspiron. Dell seems to make great laptops! My parents bought one for me before I moved off for college and it did the job for me for all 4 years! Now, my work supplies me with a laptop and it is an Inspiron 1300. I can't complain the least bit about it!
Farva Posted May 20, 2007 Author Posted May 20, 2007 Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of the input and suggestions given here, and all of it is being taken in to my decision. I'll try and keep you all updated when I make my choice.
