May 21, 200719 yr I got one of the toshiba satellite's at best buy last year day after thanksgiving on sale for 250 bucks. I like it and have no problems with it, plus I bought a sweet Nebraska Cornhusker cover that goes on the back of the monitor, its kinda like a big sticker made to fit my laptop.
May 21, 200719 yr I have an Inspiron 6000 and have really had a good experience with it until the hard drive went out on it the other day. Now I am without everything that was on my computer at the time. Microsoft Office and all the files pictures and everything. Now I am being charged for the new hard drive which they didnt tell me about that part of it on the phone. I found out when I got the bill in the mail. Dell's customer service is questionable. It is good for some, bad for others, and you are bound to have a problem at some point. I hear Mac's are great. Because they are. :thumb:
May 21, 200719 yr Author Alright guys, I ended up going with the Toshiba. I bought it at Best Buy so I will be able to get some additional technical support. One major issue was the technical support. In the past I really haven't gotten what I wanted from Dell (I hated being shipped off to India), so I'm going to try something different. And for what I wanted the machine to do, and what I needed as far as hardware, the Toshiba ended up being the better deal. Thus far I have been impressed with the machine, and I pray it stays this way. Thanks again for all of your input and opinions.
May 23, 200719 yr Oh, buy the way, get a fairly large external drive (at least as big as the hard drive in your computer) with what ever you get and back up your hard drive at least once a week. It will add a couple of hundred to the cost, but it will save you major headaches in the future. Would have been nice to know earlier....:madman:

May 23, 200719 yr The screen is amazingly bright with great resolution. and having the remote is a nice additon when watching dvds or a picture slideshow. I had considered others but chose this one for many reasons, I was familiar with HP and a couple of friends have similar models, the price was right, needed a firewire port (eliminated Acer products), and HP's have great screens and Altec Lansing speakers.
May 28, 200719 yr What would you all say would be the best laptop for a College freshman? Obviously a lot of it is personal preference but the most common laptop on campus would definitely be one of the smaller Dell Inspiron series.
