Thinking about the title run thread brought this to my mind the other day.

Trinity finished 13-2 in 2000 (my senior year actually) and our only losses were to the eventual 3A and 4A champs; Fort Thomas Highlands and Louisville Male respectively.

Comparing the two, which one was the better team?

Male's roster included studs such as: Montrell Jones, Casey Shumate, Michael Bush, Brandon Blackerby, Chris Barclay, Sergio Spencer, Todd Flannery and Marcus Green.

I am not up to snuff on the Highlands roster for that season, if a Highlands fan could fill in here it would be appreciated.

Trinity played Highlands in Beatty's first game and made a very impressive comeback against them.

Male shut the door early and didn't let Trinity back in.

Male was quicker and better athletically IMVHO.

Male may very well have been quicker and more athletic and may have very well have been the better team. Its impossible to know since they didn't play that year. But they sure had some studs on that team.

I will point out that Trinity's comeback was against only partial starters as Dale had pulled some of his starters. When the came got close, he reinserted his starters and Highlands scored pretty easily. In fact I believe it was Eamon Mueller that scored when he was reinserted. I watched a tape of that game about 3 months ago.

I think it is fair to point out, as you did, that this was T's first game under Beatty and I'm sure they were still way behind the curve in learning Beatty's system. They have obviously picked it up quite well since then:ylsuper:

Gotta go with Jones, Spencer and the Killer Bs.

Some of the players on 2000 Highlands squad

Gino Guidugli QB - University of Cincinnati

Brent Grover LB - University of Purdue

Brett Hamblin WR/DB - UK

Ben Scott DE - UK

Rob Smith (JR) OT DT - Tennessee

Highlands had a lot of good role players in 2000 and with Guidugli at QB could score rapidly.

Athletic teams did not seem to hurt them in 2000 as much as Power football teams, such as Cincinnati Elder which was their only loss and they were not really challenged after that game.

Would have been a great matchup, Too close to call - I'll say even although my heart would be with the Birds.

Didn't two years earlier Highlands beat Male when Male won the state titile in 1998?

I was at both of those games and it's a tough call. If I had to pick the better team, I would say Male.

They might have, but that was a much different Male team in 2000.

I think they were definately the best two teams in 2000, and the only way to have known would have been head to head. In 98, Highlands was by far the best team in the state.

Highlands definitely gets the overall avantage. Too many good players across the board mixed in with the superstars. There is one team that might have been better.....

...the '99 HHS team. :D

Highlands homers stuffin' the ballot box.

Tell me about it, I never would have expected TheRocketMan to come out to support HHS like that. :sssh:

I can't remember where I put my car keys much less seven years ago. The only vote I can give is a homer vote. Well, I here I go...

Maybe he's becoming more open-minded as the years go by.

Or absent-minded.
