Rule/Changes suggestions for '08

Featured Replies

Having put the '07 regular season behind us, are there any Rules/Changes you would like to see, in '08 HS Basketball....A few topics for discussion.

Shot Clock - can it be done, should it and if so, how

Refs - 3 man crew or continue 2 man

Timeouts - Too many, need more or fine as is

:thumb: Coaches - limit total on bench:thumb: , like players

Rules - any you would like to see changed/added

Any additional ideas, suggestions....

I support the limiting number of coaches on the bench rule.

A 45 second shot clock might not be a bad thing either.

Just ONCE...I would like to see a 14th region ref call an illegal pick!! Just once!!!

What are the negatives of having a lot of assistant coaches on the bench? I don't understand why this is an issue.

I would love to see a 35 second shot clock. Every level of basketball including College, International and NBA have a shot clock and I believe it would add a little more excitement to the game along with a little more strategy. It would keep the game more interesting late in games when you

would be forced to keep playing and not just be able to sit on the ball.

I would also like to see the clock stopped after every made basket during the final minute of the game. I just hate to see the situation late in a game when a team has made a great comeback and hit a big shot to cut the lead to 1 or 2 with no timeouts left and 4 or 5 seconds left on the clock, and the opposing team be able to just stand with the ball out of bounds until the game ends. I believe the game should end on the floor with the ball in play, and not with a guy standing with the ball out of bounds for 4 or 5 seconds.

I don't understand either, it's not like having more players to put in the game.

I don't really see the need for any changes. They need to concentrate on enforcing the rules that are already in place:walk:

My opinion is that in the last 3 minutes of the game, they should bring back "JUMPING THE BALL oh held ball viloations. Im sure some will wine and think this is stupid, But I believe this is only fair to a team that is behind, Make the game alot more intersting. And If it slows the game 5 minutes, Oh well ,

And a fake or flop charge, which by the rule book, is a technical. You never see it called.

Shot Clock: Hope it never happens in high school but if it were ever added then do away with 10 sec in backcourt all together. This would promote and reward strong defensive effort.

Refs: Anyone who cant see the benefit of 3 in todays game simply doesnt know what they are talking about. The kids are bigger and faster today than ever before and in good screening offensive sets it is IMPOSSIBLE for 2 to see all the action. One day a serious injury will occur off a screen in a 2 man game and when everyone from the KHSAA to the refs to the janitor gets hit with a lawsuit maybe we will see 3 become mandatory. All Mom and Dad have to say is "You knew of a better way to officiate the game by using 3 but you chose to use 2 to save a few bucks. Now our little Johnny needs plastic surgery to repair the gash from that kids elbow." Sounds like a liable case to me.....Say there arent enough good ones to go around? How do the others get any better without experience? What happens when your "good ones" retire?

Timeouts: Good as they are but get the teams READY TO PLAY on the 2nd horn. Huge time waster....

Coaches: Only need 2 on the bench max w/one trainer and one waterboy/girl. Cant think of a reason to have any more than 2. This is a game, not practice. If you need a coach to give every kid individual instruction during a timeout then what did you do in practice?

Rules: Do away with the 3 point line in high school. Someone said this helped kids develop a shot and get PT that they may not have otherwise received. I think the 3 pt line has done more to hurt overall shooting than anything else EVER. The kids that get PT simply because they can hit the 3 are most often a liability on the defensive end. Earn your PT by working on foot speed a bit instead of that long range bomb. I guarantee the foot speed and playing solid D will get you more minutes.

Another change would be to remove the foul count from every scoreboard in America. It is useless.....All it does is allow the coach and fans to start yelliing, "Hey Ref, Fouls are 7-1". Do you realize what you just said to the guy? You are accusing him of cheating...Either you insuate he cheated you to get the fouls to 7-1 OR you want him to cheat the other guys to even 'em up! Better yet, lets do away with the bonus situation all together so we dont need to count team fouls. Make every foul a two shot penalty. End of story.

I was thinking all of these things! GREAT POST!

Just to add a little to the ref section: You are exactly right about the speed of the game the the danger within. Two officials just cannot be effective in the game of today/the future. It also allows some officials that would have retired to contiune to officiate a little longer (although it didn't keep me in I am REALLY OLD)!

One more thing: removing the foul count won't help that situation. That's what one of those 6 assistants is for. But I will tell you this; I never failed to warn a coach when I officiated for saying something like that. Next inference WHACK! :flame:
