Rule/Changes suggestions for '08

A shot clock would only lead to more "pack it in" zone defenses. I'm against it. When a team is behind they would have no incentive to force the action on defense if there was a shot clock.

As far as three man ref crews, I saw a ton of basketball this year. I don't think I saw a two man crew all year. However, all the games I watched had teams in the top 25.

Time Outs. Time outs should only be reduced in games with media timeouts, such as the Sweet 16 and the Scott Co/Huntington games.

As far as number of coaches be limited, someone please explain why this is an issue. If a team has 6 assistant coaches do they have an advantage? I don't think so.

:thumb: I agree that # of coaches should not matter.

Heaven forbid that there might be more than 3 or 4 adult males who want to have a positive influence on kids through sports...

First off, they are not allowed to dunk before the officials come out. It is illegal to dunk the whole time. They are breaking the rules by doing it. About 20 years ago or more, I was involved in a scenario where the official came in street clothes sat down in the stands and the boys started dunking in a JV game. He got up went and changed, came back in and assessed double digit technical fouls.

He ended up lowering it to one to start the game instead of giving 10 or more. (forget the right number).

So to your point it IS NOT LEGAL to dunk before the officials come out. It is just that no one is out there to enforce the rules.

Then maybe the officials should come out at the same time the teams do to enforce the rules? Could be something to consider.

You have absolutely minimal clue of assistant coach responsibilities if you think multiple coaches are not an advantage.

Let me tell you what I would have liked to do with my staff.

You can have a coach specifically responsible for watching the other teams OB plays and finding out when they call A play where the cuts were going.

You can have a coach that is ONLY responsible for watching the other teams offensive calls and movement.

You can have a coach that is ONLY responsible for finding out the defensive adjustments and calls they are making.

You can have a coach that is ONLY responsible for post players and showing the 4-5 post players where the holes in the defense are. Imagine ONE coach sitting with the post players and the ONLY thing they do is sit between 2-3 of them and point out the weaknesses.

Same thing with perimeter players.

Need I go on?

I didn't have that luxury but let me tell you what I did do.

1 coach in charge of bench. stats, water, towels, etc.

1 coach usually JV coach calls ALL Out of Bounds plays. When a dead ball occurred I could be teaching on the bench, thinking about future strategies or whatever as they called the plays.

1 coach usually a varsity assistant that was a defensive coordinator. He handled the defense. In practice, when we scrimmaged, his teams were defense and mine was offense. I concentrated and looked at that. I had EXTREME and FULL confidence in him. Same with the coach on the OB plays.

I concentrated on offense. So if we did something wrong offensively, I could turn to my guards and talk to them about what we needed as the other team came down the floor, he was handling the defense. ANd when we had the ball, he could be doing the same with the bench players talking about defense.

IT CAN BE A HUGE ADVANTAGE.

Do you put a limit on when the home team comes out to shootaround in their own gym. Doors open an hour before tipoff. For JV games, officials are trying to get from Lexington to Alexandria for a Campbell game. They are making it right before tipoff.

It is the coaching staff and athletic department staff's responsibility.

Shot Clock: Hope it never happens in high school but if it were ever added then do away with 10 sec in backcourt all together. This would promote and reward strong defensive effort.

Refs: Anyone who cant see the benefit of 3 in todays game simply doesnt know what they are talking about. The kids are bigger and faster today than ever before and in good screening offensive sets it is IMPOSSIBLE for 2 to see all the action. One day a serious injury will occur off a screen in a 2 man game and when everyone from the KHSAA to the refs to the janitor gets hit with a lawsuit maybe we will see 3 become mandatory. All Mom and Dad have to say is "You knew of a better way to officiate the game by using 3 but you chose to use 2 to save a few bucks. Now our little Johnny needs plastic surgery to repair the gash from that kids elbow." Sounds like a liable case to me.....Say there arent enough good ones to go around? How do the others get any better without experience? What happens when your "good ones" retire?

Timeouts: Good as they are but get the teams READY TO PLAY on the 2nd horn. Huge time waster....

Coaches: Only need 2 on the bench max w/one trainer and one waterboy/girl. Cant think of a reason to have any more than 2. This is a game, not practice. If you need a coach to give every kid individual instruction during a timeout then what did you do in practice?

Rules: Do away with the 3 point line in high school. Someone said this helped kids develop a shot and get PT that they may not have otherwise received. I think the 3 pt line has done more to hurt overall shooting than anything else EVER. The kids that get PT simply because they can hit the 3 are most often a liability on the defensive end. Earn your PT by working on foot speed a bit instead of that long range bomb. I guarantee the foot speed and playing solid D will get you more minutes.

Another change would be to remove the foul count from every scoreboard in America. It is useless.....All it does is allow the coach and fans to start yelliing, "Hey Ref, Fouls are 7-1". Do you realize what you just said to the guy? You are accusing him of cheating...Either you insuate he cheated you to get the fouls to 7-1 OR you want him to cheat the other guys to even 'em up! Better yet, lets do away with the bonus situation all together so we dont need to count team fouls. Make every foul a two shot penalty. End of story.

You can still have these same coaches doing all these specific duties but they need to do it from the stands. They can report their info at halftime and make necessary adjustments.

At halftime, yes but on the bench pointing it DIRECTLY out to the players so the changes can be made at the end of the 1st quarter instead of halftime is a BIG ADVANTAGE.

Also, kinda hard to call OB plays or defensive sets from the stands.

Thanks for helping making my point.:thumb: :D

I agree that it is an advantage to have additional coaches - but if a head coach can get other coaches to help, why should he be penalized? If all head coaches have the same opportunity.

Did you know that only 3 coaches on the Scott Co. staff are paid? Hicks, Tim Glenn (JV) and Dudley Mattingly (Frosh) The rest volunteer (coach Hicks cooks for them and lets them use his pool and gets them some shoes and SC shirts, but they do it for the love of the game.) I can see limiting the number of PAID assistants, but not with limiting the number of coaches.

B-U-S-H!

That is pretty lame to watch in street clothes and then hand out T's, sounds like small man's syndrome.

The more I read all of the above posts, the more I think the rules are fine just as they are. No changes needed. Do we really need to complicate the game further by:

having a rule limiting the number of assistant coaches?

having a rule that the officials must come onto the floor at the same time as the teams?

having a rule that the home team can not have a shoot-around before the JV game?

The only thing I would change is to do away with the media timeouts in the televised games. There were way too many.

I agree 100% but it will never happen because of the advertising $$$ involved. There are way too many in the college games too. Thank God for TIVO - you can actually watch a game in under an hour :D

Getting capable help for a shot clock is certainly a valid concern, but I watched one of the best high school teams I have ever seen during 05/06 (DeLasalle out of Ca.) and they ran the princeton type offense and did not have 1 shot clock violation, so I don't think it would take a patient team out of its game, although I also agree that it gives underdogs a better chance without a shot clock. As a coach if you have the less talented team, then the less trips up & down the court that game the better your chances are.
