powerfootball Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Mike Lupica accused Kentucky fans of "living in the past." Also another one (don't remember the name) took a parting shot at Coach Gillispie over leaving A and M, and followed up with more blasting of Kentucky. Anyone else see it?
oldrambler Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Glad I missed it, Lupica is like a lot of other of the reporters/press/ espn ego maniacs. A legend in his own mind.
Pete W Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Lupica should stick with his sports related fiction, his books are pretty good, especially "the Red Zone" and "Bump and Run". His sports commentary is often whiney

Did he take a shot at Tubby for leaving Kentucky?
LSURock Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Did anyone think that UK wasn't going to be the media's punching bag for a while after recent developments? They ran off (in the minds of the media) a very popular, very successful (by most school's standards) African American coach to go after the young hot coach only to be scorned. They then hire a guy that has great upside but is a little on the green side (5 years as a head coach) for UK standards. This is a formula for the talking heads to take their shots. Of course winning cures all. JMO, of course.

Of course winning cures all. JMO, of course. Did Kansas run Williams off when he left for North Carolina? People make decisions in the business world, and big time college basketball is definitely part of that world. Tubby had been at Kentucky for 10 years and the last few years hadn't been much fun for him, mainly due to his own ineptness at recruiting, and dealing with a lame bunch of assisistant coaches which he chose not to address. And he saw that it wasn't going to get any better next year. So he took the best option for him and Donna and decided to start a new life in Minnesota. He wasn't "ran off"....he left on his own decision. He wasn't fired, but he was smart enough to see the hand writing on the wall. Programs like UK, UCLA, UNC, Notre Dame football, and Florida football have high expectations....and should. Sometimes a change is inevitable.
Fletch Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 They then hire a guy that has great upside but is a little on the green side (5 years as a head coach) for UK standards. . Pitino had seven years of college coaching experience when he got the UK job. That turned out pretty good.
Fletch Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Lupica was actually a little tame compared to the treatment he and Bob Ryan gave Pitino for quitting the Celtics.
Italian Stallion Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I hate that show and those guys. I'd rather punch myself in the man region than listen to them.
LSURock Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Pitino had seven years of college coaching experience when he got the UK job. That turned out pretty good. I've used this example a few times myself. Although Pitino had a final four to hang his hat on. Gillispie will be a coach for UK if he can handle the pressure. No way to know from his past, but I wish him good luck.
DragonFire Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I hate that show and those guys. I'd rather punch myself in the man region than listen to them. I feel the same way about the show, generally just because it doesn't interest me. I think it's one of the worst put together shows that ESPN features.
