New KHSAA Eligibility Rules

Featured Replies

Let me toss this out there:

The BOE will be forming a 7-member Committee to investigate the internal workings of the KHSAA and to make findings. Presumably, that committee will have every power and resource at their disposal to make their investigation, subpoena power, document review, etc.

What SPECIFICALLY would you investigate? How would you APPROACH the investigation? What PROBLEMS does the KHSAA have that need to be addressed?

Pure speculation to start looking instead of study and review. But, what I think will and should be looked at is the board staffing of the organization as a whole.

No one calls foul about Jullian Thacket running a referee class or program yet have a say about Sweet Sixteen officiating? Just one example.

The bottom line to this organization is this, 20 plus years ago no one cared, really how high school sports ran. Today, it is a multi million dollar business that is staffed and run by (sorry to be direct), ex AD or AD of various schools. Come on, this group as a whole could not foster a successful opening of a Walmart in a barren town. This is now a business, its officers and directors need to be those of business, entertainment, marketing and legal backgrounds. AD's could serve as an advisory group but really need to be pushed aside. In a nutshell, proven time and again, they are in over their heads. To prove my point, take the total funds KHSAA runs currently and has say over, compare to any non profit or for profit business, name one other place those in place at KHSAA would find equal employment in another equal size or larger business.

Hopefully this will occur but doubtful. The group looking into it, the BOE will be leaning on the Education Department for operational help. To define that group, reread the above and subtract 20% with staff serving contracts of retired educators.

We shall see.

One thing I think EVERYONE agrees on, from both sides of this issue, is that the current setup and leaders of the KHSAA are a complete mess. Their sorry track record of taking all complaints (on both sides) of improper conduct seriously and acting on them in a timely manner are what has led us to this sorry state of affairs. I would think the BOE should look into demanding some resignations for allowing things to get to this state. Someone already alluded to the fact that the Board of Control being made up of AD's from member schools many times presents a conflict of interest in decisions that impact a lot of people. They have a huge impact, no doubt, when something comes up that might have a negative effect on their school. Before anyone even asks, no I do not have any answers, just frustration like everyone else.

I think a huge step in the right direction would be for the Board of Control to be all at large appointments instead of school employees that are little more than just political appointees.

What you end up with is BOC members voting for their own re-election instead of voting what is best for KY student-athletes and the result is garbage like Prop 2 being forced down our throat by the BOE.

So who are you suggesting fills these positions?

I am more comfortable with these people voted in place by the members instead of it being appointments made by Frankfort (loaded with political appointments) in the form of the BOE, the legislature or the governor.

Also, isn't our governmental system setup as voting to rule, people who are representatives of us? And that is what the KHSAA BOC is. Each region has a representative that THEY vote on. They come to the BOC to represent the interest of the student/athletes in their region. Is that not the way our society is setup to run?

I think the major problem is that the KHSAA/BOC is given a task to do and not the power to do it. How can they investigate when they have no power to make anyone talk to them beyond the school itself and when they KHSAA does call the school out, they are immediately involved in lawsuits.

I believe it was last year that the KHSAA legal bills went over $1million, wasn't it?

Still don't have an answer, but the conflict of interest issue is a problem. As an earlier post stated, Miller of PRP was on BOC when, what sounded like legit concerns of improper conduct by PRP, was brought up. I also believe Stan Hardin of Holy Cross was on BOC during the early stages of North's complaints against them.

So who are you suggesting fills these positions?

Voting for the body government of a department within a government agency? I do not think our political system operates that way. To accept your proposal, who votes? Where does it stop? Boards for all government agencies? I understand your contention about appointments, but given who may be the voters in this board, I would much prefer the appointments over the vote. Yes, there are parts in this state I would not trust with a vote, example: look at some of the clowns that are sent to Frankfort as representatives and senators.

The statistics are that more students in Jefferson go from the publics to the privates than from private to public.

Manual has more of these "transfers" than X.

I want to represent the Catholic family whose children go to Catholic elementary, can't afford Catholic High school, and have to sit out one year, especially if due to job loss, etc.

And yes, X and T did request more money for investigators to watch recruiting which the publics and Board rejected.

Sorry-My first statement should be reversed. There are more from private to public than public to private.

My mistake-Thanks for catching it.

I'm just messing with you, man. I'm on your side. And yes, we've got Bethlehem down here which draws a lot of students from Radcliff, which I don't think is within 30 miles. So maybe I'll make some money.

Your money will not come from the Radcliff students. It will come from St. Catherine, and St. Gregory 7th and 8th graders who traditionally go to Nelson Co. and will be penalized one year for the shift. Bethlehem traditionally gets only a few of these students so the majority will be penalized. Ironically, students from Bloomfield, Bardstown, and OKH will be allowed to come to Bethlehem without a penalty since they are within the 30 mile radius.

Not if they are not on Bethlehem's feeder school list. That's the whole point of Prop 2, unfortunately, is that it will impose a list of selected private middle schools within the 30 mile radius that can go to Bethlehem without penalty. Its not just ANY middle school within 30 miles. Bardstown Middle, Bloomfield, OKH, et. al. will probably NOT be on that list. I think Bethlehem is in great peril.

I think that is certainly open for debate as the Propasal reads that the Non-public territory of a school with less than 300 students may be expanded to any student whose resident is less than 20 miles from the schools front door. (now based on earlier posts 30 miles) This may be a mute point as Bethlehem enrollement should go over 300 next year.

I bring the point up to show how poorly the proposal has been thought through. Very few students at Bethlehem come from public middle schools so that should not be a factor. Additionally 30 miles as the crow flies covers a very large distance and very few if any of the current students would not fall in this range. (Including Billy Jackson and other Radcliff players)

I wasn't sure Radcliff was even within 30 as the crow flies.

The point about ANY student is interesting. How could the KHSAA justify letting Bethlehem use any student, public or private, within 30 miles, but not let Trinity use any student, public or private, within 30 miles?

The hard side of this argument is the thought that if Bethlehem is that better of an academic choice for the student, missing games and only games for their freshmen year will not be a hindrance.

Athletes can play in AAU/Select leagues for game experience while getting practice experiencing through the HS team.

You may see a decrease in the number of freshmen teams competing through the schools.

As I said it is not well thought through and is subject to alot of debate.

Yes, but at Bethlehem, with a football team comprised of only about 25 players, the freshmen can become crucial for use on kickoff team and in other areas where the upperclassmen simply need a breather. Take away the freshmen from this year's varsity, and you are down to about 17 guys dressing for a game. An injury here, and injury there, and you don't field a team.

Unfortunately in a school of less than 300 students, presumably 150 males you need your freshman to fill a varsity roster. I understand there are small schools recruiting athletes in order to field very competitive teams. However; I can assure you that Bethlehem does not fall into that category.
