Here's what it comes down to for me, do you think Tubby would still be around if he were white?

 

I think it all plays out exactly the same, except we don't have to listen about how racist we all are.

 

My favorite argument is Dwight Perry. If UK fans are so racist that they drove out a wildly successful coach simply because he was black, then WHY is Dwight Perry the name that gets chanted for every game? We have a perfectly good white bench warmer to cheer for too (Coury), but Perry gets the chant. Yes, I realize Perry plays less and doesn't even have his name on his jersey, but if all the fans were so racist, that would be a trivial detail.

 

While I'm sure Tubby dealt with racism during his time at UK, I am also sure it is not the big issue that so many try to make it.

 

Its just like the Super Bowl this year. Who cared that Dungy/Lovie are black? I for one couldn't care less, but the media makes a huge deal of it. I also loved the way those two handled it. They knew the worst thing they can do is feed into that. They're football coaches, not black football coaches, and when everyone (white AND black) will realize that, we'll all be better off.

If you think some of the criticism Tubby Smith got wasn't because he was African-American, you're either nieve, or in denial...

I don't think the point is that racism is the MAIN reason that Tubby was driven out, at least that's not how I feel...However, I do feel like some of the criticism he receieved was because he was African-American, and I know from first-hand conversations that many people did not like him at UK because of his race...

And if a white coach was at G-town (someone other than Thompson, j/k) and he wasn't having a great season you can bet the grummling about "a white coach can't get it done here" lines would be floating free as well.

In the minds of tens of thousands of people, the following are true statements.

 

1. Smith was run off partially because he is black.

 

2. Smith would have been run off much earlier if he were white.

 

Take your choice. Now everyone wants Donovan. However, deep down, many don't really want a New Yorker who still pronounces many words in a strange manner.

 

To some it is prejudice and ignorance. To others it is loyalty and pride. Take your choice because it won't change.

If you believe that there aren't different levels of racism in different parts of the state and different parts of the country you are indeed "naive".

 

So, for instance, you're telling me Lexington is worse then say, Louisville, for example, since you are saying different parts of the state! Is that really what you're saying? If so, then call me naive.. I have no idea myself but would be anxious to see your concensus or proof as such, and not just take it as face value on your assumption... Cause with no proof to back it up, you are indeed "presumptuous".

So Rick Bozich is just making up the racist stuff he would receive about Tubby Smith? Or What about former columnist Jerry Brewer's articles on the same?

Well , then in that case, the whole topic being discusssed should probably be just left alone because as scooterbob mentioned, prejudices exist among all of us to a degree when someone is just a little different than what we ourselves may be.

You could be right, and he may still be gone..However I mean ever during the seasons when we were doing good there were alot of people who wanted him gone still because of his race. Then you had the people who also didn't like no matter what he did just because the offense he ran wasn't as exciting as Pitinos...So Tubby had alot of things going against him, and for the most part no matter what he did there was going to be a very good share that didn't want him here...I honestly believe that if he was white, and say ran a more exciting offense. Then there wouldn't be nowhere near the amount of people wanting him gone, as there were. I mean yeah people would start to be getting upset with the last two years. However if he was white, and ran more of an exciting offense, them IMO people wouldn't have been wanting him gone as much, and he probably would have stuck it out, because he wouldn't have left because of not being wanted by alot of people...

You can't factor style of play in as well. If he had done that alone, he might still be here.

Why cant I factor it in? Because it was a factor in people not liking him. Like it or not you had people who didn't like him because of his race. Then you also had people who just didn't like him because of his style. I mean even the years we did good with him there were still a good share of people who didn't like him becuase even though we were winning his style wasn't as exciting..So I think its pretty fair to say if he was white and ran a exciting style that good chance he would still be here even if he had the same record. Which would go completely against what alot of people have been saying, that it was only because of the results on the court..So to say that race and style played more of a factor that just his record here at UK is a very fair assessment. As I said before no matter what Tubby did, he pretty much would never be wanted here by alot of people for the factors I said...

You guys want to see REAL racism, go to Mississippi, I grew up there and I NEVER see racism here in the bluegrass like I saw there, and NO I'm not saying its ok but if you guys want to say KY is bad, you ain't seen nothing

I've lived in the deep south and in the north. Racism is everywhere. The country has improved significantly in the last 20 years but has many miles to go. I remained a supporter of Tubby for the last couple of years because I felt that much of the criticism was driven by racism. But after the last two years it became obvious that the program had taken a step backwards and that a change was needed. Tubby is a fine man and a very good coach and I wish him the best but his time had come and gone.
