Yes, it's part of the history and tradition of a program, that is a selling point.

 

If a recruiter walks into a home, says we are the leader in all-time wins, have "x" number of national champions, "x" number of professional athletes, who have been coached by "x" players, won "x" number of SEC regular season and tournament titles, play 95% of all games on TV and nationally televised games....it makes a difference.

 

Some coaches can say, we've been to the Sweet 16 a few times and won our conference once....sure it makes a difference.

Sad, but true, most kids just want to go play in the NBA or be on tv. Probably don't care about wins from decades ago.

 

It makes me feel old, but you think about the freshman that will be on UK's roster next year. They were likely born 1989 or 1990. In a couple years you are going to have kids who weren't even BORN to watch that game against Duke in 1992.

That's why recruiting, is sales pitch to many players in todays' time. Many have aspirations, of NBA and often want to go where a program has sent several recent or play for a coach, who is getting national attention.

 

Others choose based off what they remember, growing up as a youngster and the teams they follow.

 

Without question, recent accomplishments and style of play, are major factors in the decision process. If I'm Florida or UCLA for example, kids realize you go to final four, at these schools on consecutive years....it does make a difference.

Mexitucky. The only selling point that you mentioned that a recruit cares about is the 30million dollar complex. Realistically UK does play every home game on TV but who watches it. You forget that there is not an NBA market within 250 miles of lexington. No NBA scouts are turning on WKYT and watching Randolph, so TV is not that big of a concern. A blue chip athlete expects to play on TV. The facilities are a huge selling point because blue chip kids now want to catered to like they are in the pros and be treated as well as they can.

As far as the UK job is concerned, snap into reality people. Sure you will land a good coach, but the fans and the unreasonable expectations placed in that seat make the job undesireable.

I'd be willing to bet that IU's past history...3 titles, an undefeated season, etc...would be just as effective as that cinderella final four run when it comes to selling the program to a recruit.
