I like him and many others, just don't agree with his analysis of the UK program.

Tradition cannot be discounted in recruiting. UK has become a brand in basketball. Kids cannot tell you much detail about Uk but they know of it from hearing others talk about it. If you'll remember, Jodie Meeks dad said something to the effect of UK "being at the top of the mountain." I guarantee you Jodie had no clue as to the history of UK but UK's history was known by an influencer (his dad) and he's at UK.

 

No matter what you point to as modern-day influences that are positivies in the eyes of potential recruits, they all stem from UK's history and tradition. Rupp with its 23k seats is a direct result of the 40s,50s, and 60s. The passion of the fans stems from those eras as well. The TV exposure - ditto.

 

Tradition, regardless of the recruits ability to define it, to this day has a direct impact on UK recruiting.

If not for tradition, why are kids coming to Kentucky ? Kentucky is atleast on many of the top high school athletes lists. Why ? Is it the weather ? The nice beaches in lexington ? All of the huge night clubs the city has to offer ? Lets be honest, the only reason out of state kids are coming to Kentucky is because of tradition.

Funny but true.

Mexitucky. The only selling point that you mentioned that a recruit cares about is the 30million dollar complex. Realistically UK does play every home game on TV but who watches it. You forget that there is not an NBA market within 250 miles of lexington. No NBA scouts are turning on WKYT and watching Randolph, so TV is not that big of a concern. A blue chip athlete expects to play on TV. The facilities are a huge selling point because blue chip kids now want to catered to like they are in the pros and be treated as well as they can.

As far as the UK job is concerned, snap into reality people. Sure you will land a good coach, but the fans and the unreasonable expectations placed in that seat make the job undesireable.

No one in their right mind is going to say that UK's tradition is meaningless. But are there some legitimate statements that might begin: "Sure, UK has tradition, but..."? Yes. I think objectively you have to admit that.

Without question, you are correct and most players, who sign early choose a school for the coach and his system.

 

Tradition is vital, for those being wooed by many of the top D1 programs, including bringing in former players, to assist.

I can't speak for the others, only for myself. There are very few who you can listen to and enjoy the game. I turn off the tv volume and listen to the game called on the radio. No Caywood's out there but it is still better than the tv loudmouths such as Rafftery and Packer.

Tom Leach. That Florida writer that keeps telling Donovan to go. I think that's about it, unless Jodie Meeks is taking a media communications course.

I think that Meeks is taking a course in Taxidermy. It has an emphasis in stuffing BIRDS

The fact that Horford commented on the Kentucky job says enough IMO.

 

As for Bill... love hearing him call games, hope he's wrong on this one, we'll see.

Meeks seemed to be "blown away" with his visit to Lexington and couldn't put his finger on one reason why he wanted to play for Kentucky. "I think it was a little bit of everything," he said. "Coach (Tubby) Smith is a great guy. Who wouldn't want to play for coach Smith? He's one of the best coaches in the country. The facilities are great. I liked them a lot. It was basically the whole package."

Well, since you are being selective, ille let you know what he said BEFORE his visit. When Tubby Smith called to start recruiting him, which was VERY late in the process, his coach was very reluctant to let Jodie get involved with Kentucky. When he asked Jodie what he wanted to do he said, and i quote "Come on, it's KENTUCKY!"

And I let you know the reason he said that he verballed to Kentucky, right after he did so. You tell me what's more important to the discussion.

 

I might also add that you might not be telling the whole story. I hear Meeks said, "Come on, it's Kentucky! I need the CASH!"
