Perhaps Rafftery, needs to stick to his patented quote, after the jump....."And the defense, goes man-to-man"....instead of labeling the UK program. Perhaps I'm wrong, but one of the best tradition and the all-time winningest programs, in college basketball history....

Perhaps I'm wrong, but one of the best tradition and the all-time winningest programs, in college basketball history.... Do you really think kids now-a-days care that you won NC's in the 50's?
March 30, 200719 yr Do you really think kids now-a-days care that you won NC's in the 50's? Is it still not considered one of the 5 greatest programs?
March 30, 200719 yr Most UK fans do realize the game has changed and year in and year out dominance is a thing of the past...Too much parity in todays game...It's that crazy 18% out there that hasn't a clue and unfortunately, that same group is what gets linked to the entire fanbase, in the eyes of others... Trust me, there's alot of great fans in this state that will support the Cats every game, no matter what, and then theres the grumblers, just looking for a reason to complain, and thats what the media always jumps on.. Guys, let's look in the mirror and get real..MANY and MOST of the bad perception about UK basketball is caused by these unrealistic fans, so, if you want UK back to prominence, keep it realistic...
March 30, 200719 yr Author Is it still not considered one of the 5 greatest programs? That's not answering my question.
March 30, 200719 yr Do you really think kids now-a-days care that you won NC's in the 50's?Yes, it's part of the history and tradition of a program, that is a selling point. If a recruiter walks into a home, says we are the leader in all-time wins, have "x" number of national champions, "x" number of professional athletes, who have been coached by "x" players, won "x" number of SEC regular season and tournament titles, play 95% of all games on TV and nationally televised games....it makes a difference. Some coaches can say, we've been to the Sweet 16 a few times and won our conference once....sure it makes a difference.
March 30, 200719 yr There are two major reasons that UK is one of the best coaching positions in America. 1. Money- UK basketball will pay its coach as well, or better than 99% of the programs in America. In addition, they will give the coach every necessary advantage needed to succeed. 2. Prestige- Almost every game is televised, every home game sells out, and the national audience gets to watch your team basically once a week. That kind of exposure will not only draw a great coaching candidate, it will draw kids as well. You have to be real bad at recruiting to not get kids to come to a new $30 million dollar complex.
March 30, 200719 yr Do you really think kids now-a-days care that you won NC's in the 50's? I, too, get tired of the same ole, same ole, "UK is the winningest program" and "Best tradition" quotes... Todays kids don't care about the 40s, 50s, 60's, 70s or 80s...I'm sure they remember UKs 90s dominence, so, that in itself, will lure kids and the tradition is there, so, that may lure others, but, truth is, all they need is a coach willing to hit the street hard to get the guys and plan 2 to 3 years in advance and get em on the dotted line earlier...That was one of, if not the only Knock on Tubby..He wasn't aggressive enough and in on them early enough to get the committments..

March 30, 200719 yr Do you really think kids now-a-days care that you won NC's in the 50's? If not for tradition, why are kids coming to Kentucky ? Kentucky is atleast on many of the top high school athletes lists. Why ? Is it the weather ? The nice beaches in lexington ? All of the huge night clubs the city has to offer ? Lets be honest, the only reason out of state kids are coming to Kentucky is because of tradition.

You might have hit upon the exact reason why Tubby DID NOT work as hard on the recruiting trail. He thought the UK name was going to sell the kids......And it didn't.
