I dont really think that has much to do with what you quoted me in saying.

 

I was simply stating the tradition does have a big part in the decision of a kid coming to a school. Why would a kid want to spend his winters in Lexington when he could be setting on a beach in Miami, Southern Cal or other places ? Have you been to Lexington lately ? I dont think the city is knows as being a great place for night life. What do we (UK) offer to kids other than tradition ? I dont think kids are coming to Lexington for our nice year round weather, million dollar night clubs or shopping.

 

Tradition will get you in the door with many recruits. After you're in the door, it's the coaches job to seal the deal.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but one of the best tradition and the all-time winningest programs, in college basketball history....

 

Why is it MOST all UK fans always live in the past with the tradiition and success they HAD in the 50's with Rupp?

 

UK really isn't the same program they once were. When is the last time they made it to a final 4 or elite 8? OR for that matter out of the second round?

 

UCLA has 11 national championships. If that job were to open, it should get just as much recognition because of it's "tradition" right? Even though practically all of their national championships came with 1 coach in a 12 year period?

In all fairness he came within a nat's hair of going in 05, probably would have gone in 03 had Bogans not hurt his ankle.

 

And UC would have won the national championship the year Kenyon Martin broke his ankle.

 

Shoulda, coulda, woulda, but didn't. The difference in a real national champion from a contender is if they have a kep player go down, they can replace them.

 

EX: Ohio St AND Florida this year.

 

OSU has played much of the tourney without Oden because of foul trouble. But have a bench who can step up which is why they're in the position they're in.

 

Florida can have either Horford or Noah go down but Richardson can step in for either and not lose a beat.

That tradition extends far beyond Rupp in the 50's. UK has 3 titles outside of the Rupp era. 79, 96, 98. Yes, those are starting to seem old too, but don't act like UK fell off the face of the earth when Rupp retired.

You have got to be kidding me. north Carolina wasn't in the final four this year buddy and neither were they last year. And Ohio State isn't in it year in and year out, they have had two good years with Matta and before that they CHEATED to get their final four in 1999 with O'Brian...

 

 

My bad, I haven't watched a game since KY lost (I've been in Jamaica). Georgetown supports the arguement too. Every team except Florida has long long lists of accomplishments in college basketball. Florida's list is recent. My point was that not many things have changed. The top teams of yesteryear are the top teams of today. Granted teams change and vary year to year, but the teams on the top are typically on a short list. The mid-major power isn't what's hurt KY it's recruiting or the lack there of. Did Ohio State cheat in 1960 when they won it? Did a coaching change help at OSU?

And outside of the 78 title, the 96 through 98 team was the last real "powerhouse" UK has seen. Things have gone downhill since Pitino left. Look at the records over the past 10 years.

Well that's different, you can pretty much bet the farm UC isn't gonna do anything. They never do. They do have 2 titles from way back when, but we all know that means nothing now. And of course, UC fans don't live in the past. But FYI, the last time KY made it past the second round was in 05 when they made the elite eight. And who did they beat on their way there? You guessed it. Good old UC.

I think you are correct. With the other top programs across the country UK's win total stacks up well with them all, in the top five if I am not wrong. The problem is the abscence from the Final Four.
