I was fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to be able to attend the game. I was sitting about 5 rows behind the Ky bench with the Ky players parents & UK bigwigs. What the TV didn't show was prior to Laettner receiving the inbounds pass, he threw Pelphry to the floor and Feldhaus was left to guard him. Pitinio was double teaming him with those two which I thought was pretty smart at the time. It was a blatant foul, but I guess no ref would have the guts to call it at that point. After he made the shot, I turned around and the first person I saw was Allen Feldhaus Sr. I'll never forget the look on his face! It felt like I was in a morgue. It was the longest 10 hour drive home I've ever had.

You're right. I had it backwards. Feldhaus was thrown to the floor and Pelphrey was left to guard him.

I told my wife the same thing the other night. Its been fifteen years and I even now I think about that shot at least once a week.

I was three years old when this game was originally played. My parents tell me

that it was the first game I ever sat down and watched all the way through. It

seems ironic that I got word today that I was accepted to Duke University, for

today is the anniversary. I guess I have my own little Blue Devil vs. Wildcat game

happening in my own life.

 

With all this having been said, Laettner is still a creep.

You're right about time eroding my memory. I don't remember both Feldhaus & Pelphrey being on Laettner right at the time of the shot. He DID throw one of them to the floor just prior to the clip and I didn't think they got back up in time to guard him. You have to remember emotions were running so high at that moment. Laettner had already stomped on Aminu Timberlake and when he threw the Ky guy to the floor right in front of Tim Higgins, everyone went crazy! Then he made the shot and all of us Ky fans went totally silent. Most depressing instant of my life!

I am from the same home town. Funny story, I have a friend that had JP's mom in class. She had stepped out for a minute and the phone rang. It was JP's dad (high strung fellow), my buddy answered it and when he figured out who he was, he said to him "Mr. Pelphry tell me one thing, why couldn't he put his hands up?". JP's dad, went off.:lol: My buddy hung up and ran back to his seat... :lol:

I had a chance to talk to Pelphry not to long after that game. I ask him about that play and why he backed away. He told me he thought that he had fouled Latiener when he bumped him. He said it just happen so fast it was hard for him to remember exactly what he did until he watched it again.

I watched it all the way till 2.1 left! Can't bear to watch the end. Heard Richie Farmer say that when they were down 12 to Duke that Pitino said they have them where UK wanted them and the team believed him. If Tubby tried saying that I imagine the team would have laughed at him! lol..

Man this is kinda sad. Pelphrey looked ready to shed a tear when talking about them retiring their jerseys. What a moment in UK basketball, even though the season ended in a loss you couldn't tell it from those players. They loved playing for UK and had true passion and that was one great team!
