March 1, 200719 yr The thing that hurt Tubby is he missed twice in a 3 year period, so that ended up putting two bad recruiting classes on the same team at once. I think Tubby has learned now that to stay on top you got to be consistent in recruiting every year, and that is why we see him doing alot more recruiting himself instead of just letting assistants do it..I know loyalty is a rear thing in today society and there needs to be more of it, but I really think if Tubby would stop being so loyal to his assistants, and actually get rid of some of them and add better assistants then we would be just fine because Tubby is one of the top coaches in the country. He just doesn't have the top assistants, like most top coaches have... Without question. Everyone knows by now that I am far on the otherside of the fence when it comes to being a Tubby fan, but ina ll honesty when you can blame some things on assistants, it still all falls back to Tubby. Like you mentioned, if he would actually drop a couple and revamp the staff, then so much pressure wouldn't be on him, then maybe he could see more success. The problem is however, he tries to prove how good of a coach he is by basically filling the bench with nobody's and its extremely impossible to coach all positions and do individual, and get the most out of your players. Ask any coach at any level and I'm sure they will say the key to their success is surrounding themselves with the best help possible, no matter if it does take away from their limelight. That's Tubby's main problem is his pride.

I think if you asked him what he hoped would happen after last season he would say that he hoped Rigot and Hanson got jobs somewhere else. I just think Tubby is a loyal guy and would rather not fire those guys. He needs to, at the very least get rid of 1 of them and get someone better in the offseason.
March 1, 200719 yr I will have to disagree on Hawkins. His freshman and sophomore years he couldn't shoot a lick. But his junior year as the 6th man off the bench he started to become a better shooter, and then his senior year he actually became a pretty darn good 3 point shooter for us, and actually made alot of clutch shots...But the last two point guards we have had starting for us in Jasper, and Rondo now those two can't shoot a lick.. Jasper doesn't try to shoot; he is a good point guard; he is thinking about getting everyone else involved; he looks to advance the ball up the floor; he will penetrate from time to time; he is a team player, unlike Rondo.
March 1, 200719 yr It'd just be sooooo nice to have a PG that can actually shoot the ball with some confidence. Jasper and Hawkins can't/couldn't do that. Hey, Hawkins could shoot with lots of confidence. Unfortunately, the confidence was not warranted.
March 1, 200719 yr If you knew anything about the way Macy was at Morehead, you'd be strongly against having him anywhere near Lexington. Question... What do YOU actually know? Macy had one of the best records in MSU Basketball history winning an OVC regular Season Championship 2001- 2002 led the NATION in FT %!! 2002-2003 led the NATION in FG %!! The Nation! Not to mention that he was a NBA 1st round draft pick shooting lights out from the free throw line holding UK and Sun's records. I'd wouldn't mind an assistant coach who can coach that kind of results.
March 1, 200719 yr We dont want Macy to be the HEAD coach. IF you know anything about Morehead you know that when he was at the helm they were perrenialy at the top of the FT shooting percentage of the OVC. Wow, that's bigtime.
March 1, 200719 yr I'm hearing a strong UK lean for Patterson and Lucas. Word is they both want to come in and get UK back where it belongs. Without Tubby, no dice. Looks like both sides of the debate are all in... Considering Tubby's track record with highly rated players, I'm not sure I would want to keep him just to insure committments from Patterson and Lucas... But, I don't see him going anywhere unless he wants to leave.

The Nation! Not to mention that he was a NBA 1st round draft pick shooting lights out from the free throw line holding UK and Sun's records. I'd wouldn't mind an assistant coach who can coach that kind of results. I know plenty. I know that he never took a team to the NCAA tourney. I know that he had an overall losing record. I know that he had several professional level players on his best team and couldn't win the OVC. I know that he was an arrogant jerk that acted like he was better than everyone else in Morehead (my opinion of course). I know that he had walkons that would light the scholarship players up practice after practice, only to say "ok, let's get the scholly's back in..." I know that free throw % is an important stat, but in the grand scheme of things that doesn't really mean crap. I know that MSU was 4-23 last season, in a mediocre OVC. I know that Macy came on the radio (and yes I heard this) before a game and called one of his players "a mama's boy that had to run home to mommy because he was injured... most players would realize the importance of this game and suck it up and play, but he decided to take a night off..." I know that many times he came on the radio and on the Kyle Show to state, "we drew up a good game plan that should've won the game, but the players failed to execute..." I know from several top-level people within the MSU Athletics Dept., that he always thought he was better than the program because he was from UK. I know that MSU's new coach took a few of Macy's players (the ones that were 4-23 last season) and 8 freshmen/transfers and won 12 games and made the conference tourney for the first time in 4 seasons. I know that Macy publicly blasted MSU and took zero blame for his coaching inabilities. I know that the people of Morehead will take their chances with Macy living in Lexington. I know plenty. Is this the kind of person you want to be involved with UK athletics? Not me.

But, I don't see him going anywhere unless he wants to leave. Yeah Tubby did an awful job with Prince and Bogans. Jai Lucas is a team 1st guy who makes people around him better. Seems like a good fit at UK. Patterson is a very athletic banger. That also seems like a perfect fit at UK. I think not only are these 2 recruits highly touted players, but they are also guys who fit into what Tubby wants in a player.

I like the way everyone mentions Prince and Bogans...Bogans, of course, a guy who was good as a freshmen, regressed as a sophomore and junior, and re-emerged as a senior...but, I digress... ...the players that seem not to be mentioned... Rashad Carruth Jason Parker Marvin Stone ...and, of course, his big three of Rondo, Crawford and Morris... Tubby seems to do his best with guys that are just a notch below the top level...Hawkins, Fitch, Hayes, Daniels, Estill, Camara, and now Meeks and Jasper and hopefully Porter and Stevenson. So, please, let's be fair and mention more than Prince and Bogans when analyzing Tubby's track record with high profile recruits...

First off, while Bogans did have a bad junior year his sophomore year was very good. Bogans had a great career at UK. As for guys who didnt pan out, they have those every where. Look at Duke. They have had Pocius, Chris Burgess, Casey Sanders, etc. Everyone has had some goose eggs.

March 1, 200719 yr Man remember the days when kids wanted to play at Kentucky because it was...you know...KENTUCKY? I miss those days. I understand a Coach is a major factor is choosing a school for recruits, but I don't think holding a school "hostage" this way shows much class. I would rather have kids come to Kentucky because they want the name across their chest rather than who is yelling at them from the sidelines. I certainly hope these two young men don't cloud the direction of the basketball program. I have to question if I want recruits who are already trying to force a school hire/fire/keep a staff. Come to Kentucky because you want to rebuild the tradition no matter who the Coach is. Otherwise- you don't really want to rebuild the tradition do you? JMHO.
March 1, 200719 yr Again, in fairness, the list of players that Duke has had to pan out is a bit longer and more impressive than Bogans Prince Because they have recruited better. Thats just some players that they have had that did not pan out since Tubby has been at UK. All Im saying is that it does happen everywhere. Now I think Tubby has proved that if players buy into his system and play the kind of defense he wants them to then they will be great if they have the talent. Its pretty obvious that the lack of depth inside has really costed us for 2 years now. I think Patterson would be huge for UK in the front court!

That I won't argue with...it just seems to me, he's not very good at getting elite prospects to buy into the system, whereas the guys just a notch below have proven to be more successful for him. But, you don't have a lot of margin for error when you recruit players like that.
