Why does the 4th District only have 3 teams?

Featured Replies

The fourth district only has three teams in it. Calloway County has drawn a BYE into the regional tournament for two straight years. The second district, which is in the fourth's region (Region 1), has 5 teams. Why not have all four districts have four teams and NOONE BYES into the regional tournament. It can't be geographical, there are plenty of teams in the state who travel 50 or 75 miles sometime to play in their regional. It sure doesn't seem fair to allow only one team in the state this opportunity.

Does the team with the bye automatically go? I thought the 10th had a region like this, maybe the GRC, Montgomery district. If the team with the bye wins their game they go but if they lost I thought they had to play the loser of the other game?

When the realignment was done, the 4th District had four teams as it had for the last decade. Since then, though, Christian Fellowship has basically dropped their basketball program.

Community Christian, which is in the 2nd District, is moving into the 4th next year to fill the void.

It was a three team district when I played at Calloway County back in the 70's.

This is correct..happen a few years ago...

The 15th Region has two districts with three teams in girls basketball. The 13th Region still has a six-team district.

Interesting, I didn't realize they would have to play the first game loser to get in. The brackets on KHSAA don't show that. That makes sense. I still think they should take one of the 5 from the other district and make 4 sets of 4.

See westsider's post. They are next year. Christian Fellowship announced over the summer they were dropping basketball and by that time, schedules had already been made.

The 8th District girls played a three-team district for nearly 20 years before UHA brought back basketball a few years ago.

Same in the 6th District when Providence was in the 7th District.

Thats correct. You don't "bye" into the regional tournament. The loser of game one, drops to play the bye team. It becomes a double elimination to one team so its better to draw the first game than the bye. Example: A beats B. B drops to play C. If B wins that game, A = district champ, B = runner up. If C beats B, there is a championship game and B is finally out.

Incorrect ... Calloway County did "bye" into the regional tournament as the #1 seed. The KHSAA changed to that format when it did the big realignment.

When Providence is absorbed into Webster next year the 6th will go back to 3 teams boys and girls. That's the way the numbers fall. Unless there are changes I am unaware of.

Someone should be moved into the district to make it fair for everyone. It won't be an easy situation to fix though.

Here's an idea for that. Only district that are changed will be shown. Teams new to a district are highlighted:

Region 2

District 5: Fort Campbell, Livingston Central, Lyon County, Trigg County.

District 6: Crittenden County, Henderson County, Union County, Webster County.

District 8: Christian County, Hopkinsville, Todd County Central, University Heights.

Region 4

District 13: Allen County-Scottsville, Franklin-Simpson, Logan County, Russellville.

District 15: Barren County, Glasgow, Metcalfe County, Monroe County.

District 16: Adair County, Clinton County, Cumberland County, Russell County.

Region 5

District 17: Central Hardin, Fort Knox, John Hardin, North Hardin.

District 18: Caverna, Elizabethtown, Hart County, Larue County.

District 20: Campbellsville, Green County, Marion County, Taylor County.

District 5: Fort Campbell, Livingston Central, Lyon County, Trigg County.
Something tells me that Fort Campbell wouldn't be too thriled with venturning to Smithland or Eddyville for a district tournament when there is another one in Hopkinsville or Todd County. ;)

I agree. I'm just not sure how else it would work, remembering that the KHSAA said it was all about geography. This Providence/Webster consolidation could become a problem.
