Why does the 4th District only have 3 teams?

Featured Replies

If you did it strictly on geography, you would put Caldwell back in the 5th, move Crittenden to the 6th, move Christian County to the 7th and put Todd Central in the 8th.

I'm sure Caldwell would be tickled to be moved back to the 5th.

At one time, there was some sentiment toward moving University Heights to the 7th District.

That would work, too ... and wouldn't Madisonville and Hopkins Central just love that. ;)
Here's an idea for that. Only district that are changed will be shown. Teams new to a district are highlighted:

Region 2

District 5: Fort Campbell, Livingston Central, Lyon County, Trigg County.

District 6: Crittenden County, Henderson County, Union County, Webster County.

District 8: Christian County, Hopkinsville, Todd County Central, University Heights.

Region 4

District 13: Allen County-Scottsville, Franklin-Simpson, Logan County, Russellville.

District 15: Barren County, Glasgow, Metcalfe County, Monroe County.

District 16: Adair County, Clinton County, Cumberland County, Russell County.

Region 5

District 17: Central Hardin, Fort Knox, John Hardin, North Hardin.

District 18: Caverna, Elizabethtown, Hart County, Larue County.

District 20: Campbellsville, Green County, Marion County, Taylor County.

I worked out a scenario last night, but yours is a lot simpler. I had eight districts changing with the Bullitt schools moving to the 5th Region. There are 16 Jefferson schools in the 6th without them.

Great Idea, wonder how KHSAA will handle this new 3 team district with Providence closing, this should have been taken into place before they re did the districts, now they have created another problem

I agree with PtownDude, Caldwell would be in a more geographically configured district to be back in the 5th. Never understood the change in the first place.

It needs to be fixed, but I don't know if the KHSAA could have predicted Providence would close at the time. I don't think it was final until last fall.

Any other schools planning to close or in danger?

When Caldwell was moved to the 7th District two years ago, the KHSAA was trying to do away with three-team districts.

Actually, the KHSAA had wanted to move Caldwell to the 7th when West Hopkins and South Hopkins were consolidated to form Hopkins County Central back in the 1990s. However, Caldwell had a pretty strong voice on the Board of Control at the time, and got to remain in the 5th.

Caldwell has no such voice now, which is why it is in the 7th District.

The whole realignment thing was pretty shortsighted on the KHSAA's part, but that's pretty much par for the course where the KHSAA is concerned.

At some point, some major realignment is going to need to be considered, maybe making fewer districts (perhaps two in each region?) or fewer regions, but that's probably a discussion for another thread.

Thats correct. You don't "bye" into the regional tournament. The loser of game one, drops to play the bye team. It becomes a double elimination to one team so its better to draw the first game than the bye. Example: A beats B. B drops to play C. If B wins that game, A = district champ, B = runner up. If C beats B, there is a championship game and B is finally out.

I think someone else has corrected you, but you do bye in now. But the difference is that you (if you end up in a three team district) have to play the other teams twice to seed you. It's not "drawing" into the region any longer, it is all based on regular season seeding.

Same thing happened last realignment when the 15th region rep would have no part of just making the 15th region two districts. Staff discussed this with the board on multiple occasions since most people wanted to remain in their old "region" but district realignment was necessary. There just doesn't seem to be a big problem with having two districts in a region, top four go to regional tournament (works in football I believe), and keeps KHSAA from having to "force" people to move to balance things.

But the Providence curve ball may force things to change in a lot of areas, or resurrect the talk of two district regions.

Looks good except that you are pulling Etown right out of the middle of Hardin County and going against geography. Adair was actually discussed to move when the last realignment was done, as I remember reading.

Frankfort High

I think it is time to do away with district tournaments. With consolidation there soon will not be enough teams to field 64 districts. I think we should just have a regional tournament with all teams invited. Seed the regionals from top to bottom.

Frankfort High

Frankfort has a negative balance with all the construction they are doing. There is little chance of consolidation, unless they can not get themselves out of the hole.

It would be much, much better to eliminate district tournaments than have a couple of seven-team districts in each region.

Technically, you can still have 64 districts, with at least four teams each, as long as you have 256 schools. Kentucky still has quite a few more than that. It will just require some more juggling.
