Why does the 4th District only have 3 teams?

Featured Replies

It would be much, much better to eliminate district tournaments than have a couple of seven-team districts in each region.

Technically, you can still have 64 districts, with at least four teams each, as long as you have 256 schools. Kentucky still has quite a few more than that. It will just require some more juggling.

I understand completely what you are saying. I would hate to see districts go, but they shouldn't be huge like football was. For others reading, I think there is only one district that has more than five teams and that's the Harlan County district, which has six. The only reason the KHSAA made it larger is because of the impending consolidation of Cawood, Cumberland and Evarts. When they close the 52nd District will have four teams.

Their are a few five-team regions throughout the state, mostly found in the major urban areas of the state (Louisville, Lexington, Covington).

Districts 59 and 60 have just three girls teams each. The 52nd will have six teams for at least one more year.

I wouldn't mind having a seeded regional tournament, with all teams in the region thrown into one tournament.

Class basketball with eight regions in each class would solve the problem and still make everyone eligible for the postseason.

I like the idea of ditching the districts, the LIT and Cantrall are fairly accurate rankings, come up with some sort of program and seed from 1-what ever.

The method I would prefer is this one, which would work well in the 1st Region because each district seeds the tournament and will have four teams, starting next season:

Take the top seed from each district and award them the 1-4 seeds.

The second-place teams in each district get the 5-8 seeds, and go down the line accordingly. Seedings in each group can be done by whatever method each region chooses ... Cantrall, Litratings, blind vote, etc.

Higher-seeded teams host first-round games, and "district titles" are awarded to teams that win the second-round games. You could even redraw the pairings after the second round, with each winner playing a loser in the next round.

My vote would be for classification, but I'm probably in the minority.
