Its not a democracy letstalksports!!!

Ridiculous is thinking it is your duty to say anything on your mind about my team. Get real.

Read john boy's post. Well put JB.

No its not a democracy, but ask anyone in the college forums on this sight and tell me if those posters believe it is their duty to say what they want. As for parents trying to get involved I agree with all of you that they should keep their mouths shut. I dont think letstalksports was saying that all who had an opinion should go to the coach. He was merely speaking in generalizations. This may be getting off topic because the thread is titled parents.

LuVbasketball you are the type that can coach their own child. I do not understand people who have the desire to coach their child in every sport they play, because I had to do it at the MS level and found it difficult and exhausting.

This is a problem!, it is a problem in that most of the times the kid does get special treatment and the other parents do have problems with this. I also feel for the child too, because no matter what his skill level, others think he is getting to play because of his Parent.

If any of you, have gone through the ASEP Certification course, which are mandated by KHSAA, you will recall listening to parental concerns, is an option, given the proper setting.

Any concerns should be, as BD77 mentioned....by the Player first and foremost, which he/she can ask. Parents often approach Coaches, after a game, when they are heated and already in a negative frame of mind.

I always have a parent meeting at the beginning of the season and tell my parents that they are not to approach me to discuss playing time, etc. on game days. If they want to discuss something with me, they need to contact me at school during my planning period and we can set up a time to meet. I also let them know up front that I will not discuss playing time. Period. If they want to know what there son needs to do to improve, that is one thing. You can usually ask the player why they are not playing, and most of them will know exactly why.

I know this post is about parents, but I went to watch a high school boys game the other night and happened to sit next to an AAU coach. This coach does not have a son on the team. He was just there to watch one of his AAU players play. IMO, he was far worse about criticizing the coach than any of the parents there. To here him talk, he knew EVERYTHING there was to know about basketball and wanted to teach it to everyone around him. Every decision the coach made was criticized by this person. He was actually coaching this player from the stands. As a coach, if one of my players even looks into the stands, they will come out of the game. Fans are one of the mental traps that I teach my players to avoid to stay focused on the game. Has anyone else ever noticed AAU coaches trying to coach from the stands at a high school game?

Why be a fan if your opinion doesn't count? You can say it is ridiculous but isn't what this site is for is for fans to express their opinions?

If it's not my duty to say what I want about my team then give me my ten dollars back. I'll just go to games, sit on my hands and wear tape on my mouth!

It's not a democracy in the sense that my opinion doesn't matter in the end but if it weren't for fans and parents there wouldn't be funding for the program especially at a small school like my alma mater.

Coaches shouldn't take it to heart for being criticized or second-guessed. That should be a requisite for hiring that the coach doesn't get frustrated with griping parents and fans.

But, I'm not going to shut up just because I'm not the coach and neither are JOE SCHMO's parents.

Yes and not just AAU but other coaches, within the school system, often criticize their own. I've set with Officials, waiting to do a 2nd game and they often critique, their own peers.

I believe it's become second nature, to utilize negative criticism and adopt that "me first" attitude by some.

I agree with you, regarding the meeting and I do the same, along with providing a Handbook, for both the Players and Parents to read. It's often easy to offer an opinion from outside the game but difficult, to get those to commit as a coach.

Criticize me all you want, just remember three Rules.

1) Don't do it around your son/daughter.

2) Don't feel you have the right to berate me and expect me to listen.

3) Be prepared to deal with the consequences, of your choices.

It's all about approach and damage. Being a fan and second guessing are things every armchair quaterback does. Most "fans" love to kibbitz about how a game went. The damage comes in when a fan, a parent or an AAU coach or anybody else clearly degrades a coach, a team or a program merely because they are dissatisfied for personal reasons. Trashing a coach in front of other parents and especially in front of the players (their own son included) shows nothing but disrespect. Disrespect for the position itself if not for the person in the position. This is counterproductive and leads to all kinds of issues with a team and its players. No, a democracy it will never be and should never be.

And lastly, you try taking some of the criticisms leveled at some coaches (personal attacks, villification, rumor mongoring) and see if you wouldn't take some of it personally. Despite what you might believe, coaches are human and humans have emotions and feelings.

I totally agree, there are certain restrictions to a parent's opinons but one should know when they are going too far with their comments.

I have been told that through PMs that my posts are ridiculous. Well, I think I have found one worse than me.

Opinions are OK letstalksports, but parents and fans need to understand that they are just opinions and just because they have them doesnt mean that the coaches are going to change things because of their opinion. I have dealt with parents in the past that have asked me if I would listen to suggestions. I said Yes! Well, I listened but didnt like the suggestions made, so when I didnt implement the sugggestions they were even more ticked.

I will go on the record and say this.. Letstalksports post is not ridiculous it is a good post, but this is always a topic that is going to bring disagreements. Unless you have ever been a coach and in this position you wouldnt really understand.

LadyBearMom, dont just post things for the sake of posting. Back up your comments and tell us why that post was so ridiculous.

All I'm saying is that criticism (not all is bad either) should be taken lightly by the staff. I just think it's your right as a fan to state your opinion. If you (the coach or other fans) don't want to listen, then you don't have to.

Pretty much most won't listen nor give a fan an oppoturnity to talk.

And they don't have to...I just think they should know that regardless of what they say people are still going to express their opinion. Coaches shouldn't get so frustrated with it because it's going to happen regardless.
