Very shortsighted. One of the reasons I keep my CJ subscription is high school sports coverage. The CH used to be more of a statewide paper. Any way the CJ can pick up some of the slack? Sorry to suggest adding to your workload.

Something has to be done in the journalism industry for local communities. I'm not quite sure what the solution is because you don't want public subsidies maybe for the same thing that's supposed to be a watchdog but at the same time losing your local papers that chronicle local events, meetings, sports, etc. is important for building a sense of community.

It's sad to see all of these papers fade and nothing is filling the void.

When I was a kid our local paper in Franklin would even have recaps and line scores of the little league baseball games. Mentioned every kid that had a home run or several strikeouts pitching. They haven't done that for several years. They still cover high school sports but not as extensively as they used to. I was watching Nashville's CBS affiliate last night and they used to always have about 10 or 15 minutes of high school football coverage but last night they didn't mention a single thing about it. Just more Titans coverage 🤮

It just baffles me because it's the only meaningful area in which these papers can contribute. No one else is going to cover something locally. It's pointless to go to these papers for nationwide coverage - there are other outlets for that. The LHL may as well not exist if it isn't going to cover local. Maybe that's where they're headed.

Newspapers used to have a near monopoly. Now most "mainstream" high school coverage I see has very little engagement and is published far too long after the games to be relevant in todays world. Facebook, X, YouTube, and independent organizations have ongoing coverage of games. Additionally, the high school market is way oversaturated with coverage. Newspapers can't begin to compete with any of that. And speaking from personal experience, there is almost no money in the coverage of high school sports so none of this is a surprise to me.

This is what happens when hedge funds buy "assets". They only care about the money. They don't care about operations, services or anything else - only if they make more money. LHL is owned by a hedge fund.

To quote myself and add to this - another good example of what hedge funds do is Frisch's. The hedge fund bought the real estate. They could care less about the restaurants and we all saw what happened over time.

And I will add - the new Frisch's that reopened in Ft. Wright Orphanage Road is killing it. That parking lot has been packed from open to close. I drove by the other night at 9:30 and the lot was still full. It wasn't a Frisch's problem. Not food quality. Not service. It was a hedge fund that wanted to drain every penny they could out of the real estate they bought.

Many were unaware of that with the things involving Frisch's.

I'm actually surprised kind of that this hasn't happened sooner with the Herald. Not that I believe it's good, but it's just current journalism almost everywhere. Hopefully this doesn't happen with the CJ. The overall coverage in NKY was a big reason I joined BGP when I did, which I'm glad I have for plenty other reasons too. Unfortunately, I believe the trend is here to stay on the newspaper journalism side of high school sports, if not widen further from where it's at now.

The Saturday night KY Advocate. Bill & Larry Vaught. Those guys did a super job covering HS football in our area.

I really miss the old Advocate Messenger. Still have some old issues for different events or whatever. But now it's a joke.

Like you say, it made high school sports seem like a big deal. Their capsules for games before they happened were great. And the post-game write ups were great too.

Is it oversaturated? And where? I just ask because I genuinely feel less knowledgeable about high school sports than I have in a long time. This board helps me stay clued in.

Facebook, X, and YouTube help but it's the same thing when people say ESPN doesn't need to air highlights because they are on YouTube. That is true but I don't have time to watch 10+ videos that are 10+ minutes each on every game. When Sportscenter had a 5-7 minute blitz and covered a ton of games is when I felt most informed of NBA, NHL, NFL, etc. If you just care about 1 team, the media landscape gives you what you need. If you want more, though? There's just no chance you can stay informed as well as you used to.

Those posters are my attempt to duplicate for my players the KY Advocate. Fortunately, we have a couple very good local photographers that do quality work and share with our community. Our local paper is hanging in there and they do the best they can with a weekly edition. John Herndon does some work with his website and he is going to do a story on our program next week.
