BluegrassPreps.com Class 2A Football Rankings 8/24

Class 2A
1. Lexington Christian Academy
2. Owensboro Catholic
3. Beechwood
4. Mayfield
5. Belfry
6. Somerset
7. Danville
8. Prestonsburg
9. Monroe County
10. Caldwell County

It’s funny to me sometimes how hard it is to find 10 quality teams in these lower classes. Monroe Co. was predicted on this site as going to be horrible this season and they win one game against a poor team and now they are ranked. And I’m not saying they don’t deserve it but it’s still kind of funny.

We are ranking 60 teams each week in a state that doesn't have that much depth.

Bingo! Kentucky is not big enough for 6 classes. It waters down the product come playoff time and sets up some terrible matchups in the regular season due to forced district play. Go back to 4 classes!

Class 2A looks a little deeper in quality teams than the last few years. That top 8 probably won't change much all season. But you are right, finding teams 9 and 10 is tough. Those two slots will likely be a revolving door for a few weeks, maybe all year.

The top 6 all look strong! It will be fun to follow them all the way to the title game.

Not much here to take exception to. Early season rankings are a lot more art than science.

In a 4-class system today, with 222 teams divided evenly, you would have on average 6.9 teams per district (we'll round it up to 7). So you'd have six forced district games, instead of the 3-4 in a 6-class system. There are valid arguments for fewer classes but you can guarantee people would be complaining about those extra district games. Heck, as a CAL fan, you'd maybe say goodbye to Bowling Green and Ryle and hello to Iroquois and Waggener.

I think we need to eliminate district play, use some type of competent power rankings, and let the teams play other teams that suit them.

It would definitely make the regular season better with more competitive games. In a lot of cases those last 4 or so weeks of the season don't feature too much exciting football because of some of these lopsided districts.

Winning your district is like, the main goal for 90% of high school teams.
