Owensboro appears to be a trendy week 1 pick, but while St. X's offense may still be figuring themselves out, I think the defense, especially the DL will give the OL of the Red Devils a lot of problem

I would think that the X defense will do a good job of shutting Owensboro down. The thing that is hard to predict for any team in an early-season game is special teams mistakes and turnovers. Winning

Rash should provide one of the best environments in the state this week. The crowd will be enthusiastically pro Devils, Owensboro is brimming with confidence, and X is under new leadership. All good r

O definitely did not "blow the doors off" X. X trailing by 10 with 2:30 left and on the 8 yard line, then a pick 6 by O.

But good call on O with the clear win.

Owensboro absolutely dominated X. They beat them handily essentially without a QB. About the time ol buddy for the Devils was taking it up the sideline for 99, the doors were 100% being blown off.

Not judging coach off 1 loss on the the road to the 5A State Champions. We'll see if they get better any as season goes.

Congrats to Owensboro on hard fought win! St. X defense can keep them in some games because few teams have as much speed Owensboro has but the offense can't turn the ball over plus get dumb penalties like offense face masks and false starts. QB Shoptaw had 3 interceptions and 2 of them were pick sixes which is unacceptable. Next up is Bowling Green which won't be easy.

X has a top notch defense and that will win them a lot of games. O has super explosive athletes on both sides of ball but X made O offense work for every yard. That’s even when Ganaway was in game. The super fast corner that X had was matched up with Dillard a lot - he has to play some offense for X going forward.

I agree Jamari Carroll needs to play both ways.

Glad I got to make this trip, always fun to do a double header the opening weekend with BG tomorrow!

For the Red Devils, speed everywhere. They don't have the best lines, but their lines really battled tonight and neutralized what had to be an X advantage and it wasn't. Really hate the O starting QB went down. But it wasn't a sack it was a chosen run and he just got hit and injuries happen in a collision sport. But I thought the young O QB played admirably well. Yes he had the fumble, but hung in there. He'll be ok but maybe not against CAL. The O OLine did well. I don't think they gave us a sack. Shemwell is a beast. Dillard is a matchup nightmare. But I have to say that Ty Ashley is the biggest competitor. On punt coverage, who is the first guy down on the ball EVERY time? Ty Ashley. Speaks volumes about why UK would extend him a scholarship.

For St X, honestly I expected more. But 4 turnovers against anyone is bad, but when it's against a really good team it is cripling. The OLine looked pretty good early, but felt they didn't stick with it enough. Perhaps it was because when O sensed X was struggling to pass they tightened the run defense. Likely. The X defense played well. That is a tough team to contain and honestly Os offense was throw screens and let their athletes beat you and over the course of the game they did. They also had good Walker runs too, but not the majority.

Congrats Red Devils! See ya next week Tigers!

Owensboro is legit.

That said, this is not a good X team by X standards.

I think the real test of where Owensboro stands comes next week against CAL.

I know people will say it’s just a scrimmage but this same X team just held Frederick Douglass to 0. The same Frederick Douglass that just hung a 40 points over Highlands. St. X is good.

As far as the CAL game goes that’s a different animal. O will need everyone healthy to be competitive in that game.

St. X will be alright. The defense is great. That’s the most touch’s Dillard has gotten in a game. Outside of maybe 2 carries, the tigers had him bottled up and gave little to no breathing room for our other top tier WRs and a phenomenal RB in Walker from breaking one.. Much like the Devils last year, this Tigers offense is new/younger. They will continue to get better as the season progresses and by post season be a tough out for any team in 6A.

Had some audio hiccups but wow that’s big time production- great job to all on that. It was amazing - multiple cameras, graphics. Looking forward to that going forward!

Owensboro’s back up QB is an 8th grader.

If Owensboro’s dB’s turn around there would be 2 more picks.

8th graders can't play high school football.

Big difference in throwing the ball in 1A compared to 6A. He's a good quarterback but that defensive speed adjustment will certainly take time.

Going by reading the game thread, it sounds like Owensboro is nails defensively and that this could have been worse for X than it was.

Conversely, take away the defensive TDs from both teams, and it is 10-0 game. Unless the ball crosses the goal, yards gained count for little.

I would think that the X defense will do a good job of shutting Owensboro down. The thing that is hard to predict for any team in an early-season game is special teams mistakes and turnovers. Winning these two hidden facets of the game often lead to early-season wins. They are also the biggest wild cards in early season games. Having said all of that, I think X wins barring any costly turnovers or glaring special teams mistakes.

Tough to win against any opponent with 2 pick-6's. Turnovers in early-season games make them highly unpredictable. The Tigers special teams were good for and early-season game.

X needs to play cleaner football on offense to be competitive. They don't need to score 35 every game with the quality defense they have. But they do need to be able to move the ball, not make costly mistakes, and score in the red zone. I was expecting more from the running game. To be a good team, you have to be able to run it some when everyone in the stadium knows you are going to run it. Either the Tigers were unable to do so, or they did not stick with the run enough. Time will tell.

On another note, I thought the Owensboro YouTube broadcast was excellent. While the announcers were definitely "homers," they were fun to listen to and did a good job.

Good job by Owensboro to grit out a win while losing their QB.
