Arguably the best coach in the 8th region, Chris Gaither, was told by administration yesterday he is suspended until further notice from coaching. No details are being shared at this time from my sources.  

Although, I have no info I do know he dealt with an over the top mom last year and her son ended up transferring. Not sure if this is related .

What school?

Gaither coaches at Collins. Unbelievable if it's true.

There is a pending lawsuit in Shelby County Court, filed by coach Gaither against a few folks, who, as I understand it, are parents of former players.

Yes, I have only heard through a third party but it got really ugly with accusations of verbal , emotional abuse by Coach Gaither towards the player . 
Heard the parent was a problem from day 1.

 

I don’t know Coach Gaither really great but I know people who do. I am told he is regarded as a great family man.  

Steve Simpson is the best coach in the 8th.  Gaither is great, and as someone who knows nothing about this situation, from details shared in this post, and from what I personally seen from my own eyes, I got to believe this just a loose cannon parent issue.

I wouldn’t disagree with you on that . Steve Simpson can flat out coach.

Parents are why GOOD coaches get out of the Coaching business. Sad!

Back in the day (yes I’m older than most on here) it was the best “profession” to positively impact young people. It is not that any more.

Coach Gaither filed a defamation lawsuit against two sets of parents back in June.  The parents have filed counterclaims.  Several accusations flying from both sides.  No clarity in the article about the school's position or why they placed Coach Gaither on suspended leave with pay.

The lawsuit filed by Gaither in June names Amy and Andrew Ballard — parents of a former Collins player — and Kelly and Michael Higdon — parents of a current Christian Academy player — as defendants.

The lawsuit says Gaither “was in serious discussions” with Christian Academy athletics director Brad Morgan during April 2025 about becoming the school’s next boys basketball coach. Ultimately, Tim Riley was hired as the Centurions’ coach.

Court documents attached to the lawsuit include a letter from Amy Ballard to Collins and Shelby County administrators dated Jan. 17, 2025. It stated team morale “is in the toilet” because of Gaither’s “mishandling of our children and the program.”

“Chris Gaither has lost the respect of his team and the parents,” Amy Ballard wrote.

An email forwarded from Kelly Higdon to Morgan, the CAL athletics director, dated April 13, 2025 — according to the lawsuit — included “false and defamatory statements” regarding Gaither’s “coaching skills; his teaching and classroom skills; his alleged misappropriation and/or stealing of monies intended for the benefit of the basketball team; his alleged ‘bullying’ and ‘abusing’ of players and students under his supervision, care and tutelage; and his alleged ‘fishing/grooming’ of ‘young girls’ and/or sexually inappropriate behavior toward minors in the community.”

The letter was not signed by Higdon but instead was signed by “Families of Martha Layne Collins High School."
