I will follow up and say - I believe this is the best all-around Owensboro team since the last state championship team.  Not the best O-line but a really solid one.  Best RB since Justin Miller, best WR I’ve ever seen and the best QB I’ve ever seen (yes over Wimsatt) - this is in comparison to other Owensboro players over the past 40 years. Very solid group at WR with a number that can make tough catches - Bryant, Dillard, Morris, Shemwell x 2, Fountain, Ashley at TE.  Muster one of the best O & D-lineman I’ve seen in a Devil uni.  Solid and very fast D line with Clark, James, Muster and now add Pullom into the mix (All Evansville Metro last year) - he’ll be available round 3.  D-line James and Clark are 4.6 guys off the edge and I’m sure Pullom is right there as well.  GREAT LB core with Conrad, D1 guy Ashley and Hampton (Eli), Kindle/Burk - very fast and tough group.  Secondary is really good and one of the best I’ve seen with Green and Roney (Ohio transfer game 3) and I believe Carr and Shemwell at Corner.  RB Hampton, green, Kindle.

Defense gave up 7 to Apollo, 7 to MNH on a fluke, 21 to Catholic, but only 7 until the final couple of minutes (fumble by RB2 set them up in the red zone on the first and about 60 yards in penalties the other).  Whether or not they are number 1 remains to be seen, but the teams passes the “best of” eye-test for me.  I THINK this team is better all-around than the 2020, 2014,1999 and 2000 runner-ups.  So does that mean they can beat greenwood, then Fairdale, then Atherton, BG, Cooper, then Scott or Woodford in the finals….I would think they can, but those are all tough teams.  Our new coach is changing the culture and O attacks you on your weakness and how you play us.  Phenomenal job for the coaches too.

I don’t’ think Devils fans would trade teams with anyone, but let’s beat Greenwood first.  I’ll take a 7 point win it doesn’t matter.  Win and move on.

We will win by more then 7 against Greenwood. I think we win it all to be honest, Brown. These players are the best we have had in a LONG TIME. IF we win state I will go and say they are the greatest team EVER at OHS and I would debate ANYONE on here or anywhere. However, I've seen us say "this is the team" and get very disappointed. One of those disappointments was the 2014 Highlands state championship. Up by 42-14. We get shutout in the second half and they score 35 unanswered points in the 2nd half and we lose. Driving back from WKU that night seemed like it took forever.

  • Well for you Brown, I will give you my Drive-Thru Special! Owensboro Red Devils The Red Devils are about a month away from the year anniversary where Coach Jay Fallin stepped down.  From the

Greenwood will be the toughest team these Devils have seen in a couple of months, and if I single out the Gators defense you can add another month to that time table. As I do respect the Aces as a whole I don’t think the two defenses are comparable. If the ball bounces differently in a couple of the Gators losses they could’ve been an 8-2 football team and district winners, they have a legitimate football team.

Haven’t seen much of Owensboro this year, Hampton is a stud that’s forsure. I’m sure the Devils OL has improved as the season has progressed but the front 7 has been the strength of the Gators and they’ve showed up all season long. Also don’t see OB carving this secondary either not because they are elite but the pass rush will get after the QB; Ganaway has 26 TD’s and only 3 INT’s while creeping up on 2k yards. Very impressive numbers considering it’s only on 159 attempts.

Just another week where Greenwood hopes to suffocate the opposing offense, win the field position battle and find a few opportunities for the offense to score some points. The SOKY ties have me hopeful the Gators can compete in this one and I do believe their defense can do enough to win the game, just will need more than Davis Chaney offensively. The Gators RB Self and the QB Wyatt will have to play the best game of their season for any chance in this one.

To say that an Owensboro team that got absolutely smashed and running clocked in the first half if I remember correctly by a smaller class school (CAL) that both a down BG and a decent Lex Christian school played within one score of is the "Greatest Owensboro Team of All Time" is an absolute insult to the history of a football tradition-rich school and may be the most outlandish claim I have seen on this board.

Is this Owensboro team good? Sure. What quality wins do they have? Madisonville North Hopkins and O-Cath. Of their quality wins, in the 2nd round, mind you, only one of those teams is still playing.

I'm ignorant when it comes to these things, but why are these player available in round 3?  Are they new transfers? Were they hurt?  Did they play at their other schools this season? Have they been on OBoro's roster all season?

Transfer in from newburgh castle - All-  metro.  Been on the team all year - can play round 3 - is a very dominant DE/OLB

I agree. I love my fellow Red Devil fans, and everyone has a right to their opinion, but I’m just not sure where some of these takes come from. I believe OHS has improved. But the back half of the schedule, and by back half I mean from CAL on, has been so weak it’s hard for me to gauge how much improvement has occurred. (And yes if it isn’t obvious I think Owensboro Catholic is overrated this year.) Yes we have put up big numbers but we’ve also played our starters until late in those games. I guess I just have a more wait and see view on things. For years I’ve felt Red Devil nation has been way too happy beating the city teams, the Madisonville’s, Henderson’s, etc. And I feel like some of our fans are having those happy feelings again right now. And I’m not just talking about on this sight either. I’ve seen fans on social media with wild takes. We’ve thoroughly beaten the usual suspects and everyone is riding high. But truthfully this side of the state is pretty pedestrian this year. (Losing South Warren was a huge hit!) As many have said I think you can take the top 4-5 teams in 5A and all are capable of winning the title this year. If Owensboro was to win it all this year I would put this team up there with the ‘86 3A champs. That team started off like 1-3 that year if my memory is correct.

Finally someone with some sense.  I mentioned how weak O's schedule was last week on their thread and was told that it I was wrong LOL.  I just don't see any good wins other than a 2A OCath team.  Outside of that give me one win that proves they are even in consideration for being an all time great and elite Owensboro team.  It is wild to hear the claim and to say that Wimsatt is worse than Ganaway at QB.  Until he leads them to a state championship game or beats a quality opponent, I refuse to think that a kid that had D1 offers flowing in throughout his high school career is worse than a kid that beat OCath by 13 and got slaughtered by X and CAL.

I think the Catholic win was a quality win.

I agree.  That is the only quality win I see, which was mentioned in my post.

You also said O wouldn’t running clock Grayson. Then they proceeded to put up 62 points. And MNH was a good team until O beats the breaks off them now they’re a nobody team when none of their defeats were more than 9points other than O. Even GW (whose considered a solid team by many of the BG area folks) only beat them by 3. I’m sure after O beats them they’ll be a nobody too. O could running clock everybody in the playoffs and the sentiment on here would be 5A is just down this year.

Also comparing Wimsatt and Ganaway atp isn’t fair because 1 had 2 1/2 yrs in a system with other players he’s played with since middle school, and the other is playing with a team he just met less than 8months ago. Can’t really hold the CAL and St. X game against Ganaway. But based on efficiency alone Ganaway is better.

Its always tough to judge OHS vs the teams in the east.  I do think the Devils are the most balanced team in 5A between offense and defense.  Their schedule after the first 2 losses has not been real tough, but they absolutely dominated solid programs in Owensboro Catholic, Apollo, Madisonville and Henderson.  I think the defense is what sets them apart.  Woodford, Cooper, Scott Co, Pulaski have all given up pretty big numbers from time to time this season even though I realize Cooper has played a much more difficult schedule.  I also wouldn't sleep on things coming together for Bowling Green.  Atherton would be my unknown in 5A.  While there is solid balance across the class, I would argue this is as down as 5A has been across the board in the decade I've been covering the area.

If the Devils run into a team that can stack the box enough to take away Hampton and have the secondary to limit Dillard in the quick passing game, they could maybe slow down this offense.  I'm just not sure that defense exists in 5A.  The fun thing is, we're about to find out.

Completely forgot the discussion about this game.  If Greenwood can find a way to pickup some first downs on the ground and run some clock, they could keep it somewhat interesting.  The 33-19 result against South Warren tells me they can compete in this game if things go their way.  That said, being one dimensional against the Devils front 7 is going to be tough sledding.  If they can't extend drives, this one is going to get ugly.  I'll say Owensboro stays hot...

Ouch 49 to 14?  Wow that would be nice.  I’ll take any win but that sounds good to me if it happens!  Teeroy’s Top Thirty says O will win 94 to 3.

I realize O'Boro lost handily in the 1st 2 games, but, I'd also say there isn't a 5a team out there that would have faired any better against those 2 teams. While the schedule has been easier since then, they've still been dominant against some pretty decent teams. and I don't see any other team from out west to challenge them till the semi's. Atherton would be the 1 team I'd be concerned about. I think this is just an off year for B. Green and would expect the Devils to beat them pretty handily this year. Once they get to the semi's, they'll be challenged by Woodford, Pulaski, Cooper & Scott Co, but, I'd give them a solid chance to win it all.
