Beechwood 68 Owen County 6

Interesting that no one commented about Dixie putting up 60+ against Scott. As I understand they scored 43 in the first quarter. That was a 5A district game. If you take a knee three straight times and punt people criticize you for not respecting your opponent. In a state semifinal game last season Cooper outscored Highlands 54-7 in the second half. Unfortunately in football it happens. So you guys think seeding the playoffs by RPI is the answer? If you limit it to 16, I could understand that. People just can't complain about travel. In 6A very rarely would it matter. Trinity,X, Male, Manual, etc. will always be there because of schedule. If you play a good out of state team(as T,X do) you can't be punished. Classic example..... Cooper played #3 overall ranked Anderson and lost.....are they penalized for that?

I believe the running clock started with about 9 minutes left in the first half. I disagree on shortening the quarters. A running clock moves fast. Let the other players who work their butts off

  • Since the KHSAA uses RPI we can do away with districts and therefore eliminate the majority of mismatches.  Let every team play a schedule that suits them.

Stat pad? He touched the ball 6 times and scored 5 times. How is that stat padding? If they wanted to stat pad they would have let him run every punt back for a TD. Beechwood didn’t ask to be in this

Well ... pretty sure Cooper didn't get much from a loss regardless of who they lose to. With that said, it could also penalize a team like Cooper if they beat Anderson (because all out of state teams have the same value). So officially not penalized ...but if Cooper beat Anderson, Moeller, St Xavier or Little Sisters of the Poor From Wapakoneta ... they get the same point value. (Unless something has changed since the last time I read up on the topic)

So technically not punished ... but they wouldn't be getting the value deserved VS beating  KY team with similar enrollments to the out of state teams I mentioned.

For those that did not see the game, BW only ran 20 plays on the night for 404 yards.  After being up 21-0 and having only run 1 offensive play, Coach Voelker had Fryman fair-catch multiple punts with clear turf there for big returns.  Coach obviously felt Tigers needed/deserved at least a few downs with offense on the field.  68 pts is a lot when only 20 plays are run by the offense.  Stay strong Owen County, great days ahead.

I suppose my question would be, if he were fair catching, why not just let a sub play?

If I were in charge I would want to get my top players reps fielding punts.  It may be the difference between winning and losing the state championship.

Having another person with game experience is also helpful, if god forbid something happens to a star player.  I don't think the score was unexpected, but letting your best player stat pad with 5 TDs against a far weaker opponent is kind of lame.

Most teams put their 2's in during a running clock but choose to use the 1's in special team situations.  Its probably easier to manage during a varsity game.  I have no issues with this.

Maybe 5 minutes left in 1st qtr a little early to start mass substitutions, and remember the objective was to finally get the offense some snaps.

Maybe another one and you can't pad your stats on fair catches.

Beechwood didn’t ask to be in this district, it’s unfortunately the district they are stuck playing, are they supposed to not play up to their abilities for the next 5 weeks so that they don’t score any points?

I think maybe @theguru meant that the offense wouldn't have been able to get their chance. That 20 plays would have been a few less for each punt that was not fair caught.

No, I want my top two punt returners getting lots of reps, period.

I'm here for it too!

In addition to comments others made above, I will point out that no Beechwood starters played in the second half.

At Some point in time you have to worry about the starters losing game experience and game conditioning. You keep being “nice” to where it’ll hurt you when you have to play in a hard fought game.
