I feel that A schools should declare which tourney they are going to play in prior to the season. If they choose the All A, they would be ineligible to play in the KHSAA state tournament.

Basically, the All A Classic is one giant invitational tournament.

Scoring margin with Brossart really isn't that big of a deal because their style of play is going to keep the scores low.

? Brossart has about 300 coed students. They work hard every day and therefore can compete with and beat much bigger schools. UHA has won the All A seven times. This is Brossart's first. Again, what makes "the likes of Brossart" different from UHA, Gallatin, Bardstown or New Cath?

True, but when LC was still eligible to participate in the All A, they passed.

So small schools like Holy Cross, St Henry and Brossart dont get an advantage later on in the year because they have played on a big stage like this?

I don't think its that.

You can look at it as a disadvantage for participating schools also. Can't be easy to peak as a team in February and then again in March.

Can't speak for them all, but Brossart lost six straight after the All "A" last year; so maybe you're right??

You can't blame them, it's a huge event for those kids, they leave it all on the line for statewide recognition, you have to expect a let down after it's over and the "regular" season continues.

Not true. Lexington Catholic played in the All A Classic until their enrollment made them ineligible for the tournament.

 

 

I wondered if anyone was going to point that out. There was discussion at the time that Lexington Catholic was no longer going to be eligible during its last trip.

 

The All "A" is a nice bonus for small schools. It certainly doesn't provide a huge boost for the Class A schools. Some argue that it hurts the Class A schools in the "real" tournaments in March.

I actually attended the organizational meeting of the inaugural All "A" Classic back in 1980 and still have my memento provided by Drew Lombardo of Sports Arena.

 

Stan Steidel and his group did indeed envision a tournament which would showcase the talent in the small schools such as Dayton, Ludlow, Bellevue, and the then small Class "A" Catholic schools such as St. Henry, Holy Cross, and Brossart.

 

Unfortunately, over the seventeen years that the tournament has gone statewide no Northern Kentucky (NKAC) Division III team has made it to the "A" State Tournament, while the "A" schools that compete in (NKAC) Division II have dominated the trips to Lexington/Richmond. So, in fact, not by design, it has become a Northern Kentucky mid-major tournament based on the ability of the Division II teams to compete at a more competitive level.

 

When we (Brossart) won the 10th Region Championship and went to Rupp in 2000, the following year we beat 17-0 Silver Grove for the trip to Richmond. While I was thrilled to be going to the "A" State for the first time, I still had a soft spot in my heart for Silver Grove, who would have taken the whole town to Richmond and fulfilled Stan's vision.

 

My thoughts at that time were that maybe, as in horse racing, they might think about setting conditions for participation in the All "A", such as "for Class A schools who haven't won an at large regional tournament in the past X years.

 

When I proposed that here on BGP, someone made the comment that I was advocating a "Best of the Worst" tournament, and they were right. So while it doesn't exactly fulfill the purpose for which it was created for the small Division III schools in Northern Kentucky, it does provide that opportunity for some of the other small schools throughout the state.

I dont like the idea, but they do need to be smaller numbers allowed in the tournament. And Im not saying that in regards to any certain team, Sheldon Clark competed in it, they have always been a small 3a to a large 2a school. Def make the numbers smaller I think.

I think if this proposal would fly, then you would see the group of teams that Stan Steidel ultimately hoped would have an opportunity to play for a state title.

In season tourneys are everywhere. If your coach or administration think one in particular will help prepare you for the postseason then they should seek an invite. the 5/3 or the KOB do not really discriminate. If you think you can compete then go for it. What is unfair about that.

The All "A" Classic is an invite tournament. You are invited as long as you meet enrollment requirements.
