I wonder if this post made someone panic, and threw something together while prepping for the first day of classes lol. It kinda came out of nowhere.

Who knows...

To every school administrator looking to tackle this issue, if the words "credentialed media" appear in your new policy, you have failed.

Could they try, I guess, but it wouldn't go anywhere.  Remember, these are public events funded with our money.  Sometimes the schools/coaches forget that.

It would go just as far as the videographers attempt, imo.

Based on this logic, we shouldn't charge to get in to events either, and once everyone is in for free they should have free rein of the place.

I definitely think this should be the norm.  How do we know the cameraman doesn't have a violent criminal record or something of the sort.  The fact that schools just let these news stations pull up by the gates, park illegally not in spots, and walk onto the field without anyone saying a word is truly mind blowing when you think about it.

This is happening less at some NKY high schools. I've seen one major local station turned away at a NKY high school last year.

Flip side, school could take legal action against unauthorized use and publishing of students.
It’s silly season.  Parents pay these people to come and shoot/tape these games.
No one, I don’t think, is saying they can’t come and do their thing.  They can do it from the bleachers.  Would they still do it?  Just because you have a camera means you are media.

I don't follow your logic at all, CW.  You quoted my response to ProblemChild (the bolded part) saying a school could take legal action against a photographer/videographer for using photos from a public event.

Please give us the complete story here?

I see that now and see how it would be hard to follow.

My point was that the chances of a law suit sticking from the schools to the videographers is just a likely as vice versa. It's a slippery slope the courts aren't going to dive into.

If they do, and the premise is they should be allowed to take pictures wherever because it is a public funded field, school and even team, then you open a can of worms on even charging admission or telling fans to stay in the stands.

I think you are making a false equivalency between a parent taking legal action against a "media outlet" for using a photo from a public event and a "media outlet" taking legal action against a public entity for discrimination.

The last part of your response is way out there in the speculation weeds. ?

I'm never fully out of the weeds lol.

I think we're missing the real victims here.  When your kids play at a "historically established" program in NKY, and there's multiple different professional photographers at every game, your wife makes you BUY all those pictures.  It's a lot of freaking pictures.  I'm just saying. Carry on.

Good one and you make a great, maybe unintended, point.  As father time moves on everyone in your family will look back and be thankful you had the ability to capture all those great memories.  However, if some "schools" had their way, you would be out of luck..

After reading all of these posts I've come to the conclusion that everyone with a camera, phone, media credential etc, just be allowed to walk around wherever, take pictures, video, ask the coaches why Bobby is playing instead of Billy, confer with the sideline officials, and just do whatever they feel will make the game a memory for the fans, players, moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, and impress SEC and Big 10 coaches. Gosh, it really is a blessing that I coached and officiated in an era where we didn't have to deal with this stuff. But, I did get to do the weather report during a pregame for Channel 5 lol.
