The former White Sox closer (saved 34 and blew 5 in 2005 for the Pale Hose with an ERA of 2.04), who missed nearly all of last year with back problems, is in conversations with the Reds. Could this be there "gap insurance" for this year at the back end of the bully? Would you sign him? Apparently there are a number of suitors, but should the Reds be aggressive in his pursuit or stand pat with what they have back there?

I know he's not a starter which is where most of us dream. Our pen doesn't exactly stir up much confidence currently, for me at least. As long as signing him doesn't hinder a possible longer term deal for Harang.

January 30, 200719 yr Minor League Deal...That's about it me to welcome another journeymen veteran to the bullpen. Looking at the FA list in today's Herald-Leader...Why not sign someone like Joe Randa to a 1-year deal with incentives or a minor league contract?

Putz for Seattle, Dempster for Chicago, Worrell for the Giants, Turnbow for the Brewers, Jones for the Tigers all fit into this category and performed nicely. Coffey may prove himself to be reliable in spring training or he may serve nicely as a setup man for Hermanson if they sign him. The Reds haven't shown the willingness to plop down huge chunks of money in the offseason so the low-risk, high reward route is the way to go. But they still have a long way to go to equal what the Astros and Cubs have done as well as the Brewers, who have enough injured players returning to rival the changes that the other two have done.

January 30, 200719 yr Being a fan of the Sox, I can tell you that he is a great clubhouse guy and is a great pitcher "when healthy". Course those are the two key words, so give him a try, but I honestly don't know how much he has left.
January 30, 200719 yr I'm not sure what Hermason is looking for in a contract, but if the terms are reasonable, we sign him, and he stays healthy we pick up one heck of a closer. At least relative to the reds situation the past few years.
