University of Cincinnati vs. Cheatham (TN) Middle School

Featured Replies

UC has ordered Cheatham Middle School in Tennessee to immediately quit using their C-paw logo (which is similar to the university's logo) and to stop using the mascot name of Bearcats. The university did concede the school could continue to use red, black and white as their color scheme (that's mighty big of them).

The county AD said he understood UC not allowing them to use the logo but was upset they could not remain the Bearcats as UC claims that also is theirs alone to use. Kids at that school have been known as Bearcats for over 20 years.

I'd have thought that parents and students would have bought thousands of dollars of UC licensed products to support their school and teams.

I think we all know high school teams that use the same logos, names and colors of college and even pro teams. As an example, you go to a Wayne County Cardinals game and you'll see licensed Louisville Cardinal gear at every game, probably the same at every school with a Cardinal mascot in the surrounding states.

I know it's their legal right to do this, but should UC have just looked the other way on this?

There appears to be 95 high schools and colleges using or have used the Mascot Bearcats according to Massey.

Since that's the fact, I'd change to logo and tell UC to pound sand, "We are staying the Bearcats!"

This is where I'm at, and honestly, I believe this is where UC is at. Giving the expectation of changing the logo AND mascot as a whole gives the middle school the option of settling outside of court by "meeting in the middle" and changing the logo only.

With as bad as that logo is UC should take it as a compliment. Cincinnati has had exactly one item ever that anyone else even tried to copy, the Jordan uniforms with the paw print on the back of the shorts.
High schools try and mimic colleges all the time and this is so petty.

Just heard on KSR that Xavier has offered their mascot and logo to Cheatham Middle. They have also offered to sell their shirts on their website and to help them with the transition in all ways to Musketeers.

Good on you Xavier!!!

UC sucks. We already knew this. ?

And yeah, I'd tell UC to shove it. What are they going to do?

You can't spell sUCks without a U and a C.

This story is a bad look for UC.

Please remember we bailed you guys out on Satterfield.  Another example of UC just botching things.  How's that coaching hire working our for the Bearcats? ?

I see 5 toe prints and a weird C on the middle school logo (sarcasm).

Honestly when I read this I was like what in the world UC?  Let it go......Heck they could even partner with the school or something and get some positive vibes.  Oh wait Xavier offered to do that....smart move.

I retract my statement. LOL

I’d copy the logo even closer and invite Bob Huggins to give a spiel at the unveiling.

Quite frankly, and I'm offering my opinion here, I've always thought the logo sucked.
