Covington Catholic 49 Beechwood 28

490 yards rushing

If you are the Beechwood coach, you have to look at that number and question every single thing you did defensively in the game. Scheme, strategy, how each player was coached in their keys, players used in each situation, substitutions - everything! There are no easy answers. With the talent Beechwood has on their roster, 490 yards rushing should never happen against any team.

Beechwood got out coached badly and it shows. I’m not sure what we’re doing when they line up under center with 2 backs in the backfield and tight end. They’ve ran that formation for years now and it’

  • - The run game is very dynamic for Cov Cath, the new runs we’ve added this year (ex. QB counter with the back leading) are noticeable. I think Harney, in particular, has really improved his vision eve

Give it a rest on the QB stuff brother. We all know you love Cash. And he can certainly run the ball, not saying he can't. But that isn't why CCH won this game. I agree with the rest of what you

Have never seen 490 rushing yards ever allowed in high school, college or pros.  Actually hope it doesn’t impact the fight in these Tigers.  Too much talent and I have no doubt there will be a re-examination by the staff to analyze how this defensive collapse happened.  Resembled more a track meet than a football game.

I thought it was definitely some coaching (lots of 2 high coverage vs a run first, run second team) but a lot of it was lack of talent relative to Cash Harney and Dylan Gaiser.

There were a few times Gaiser broke tackles or shook unblocked defenders before long gains.

Cash Harney will expose DBs and erase angels if they’re not athletic enough.

I think it’s a bit of both with more on the talent side. However, both of those guys are real tough to deal with in space.

Danville had 500 yards rushing on 67 attempts against Beechwood in the 2003 Class A State Title game.

Thanks JB, forgot that complete thrashing in the 42-7 Ads victory.  Tigers rebounded to get revenge in 2004 with a 23-7 Championship over Admirals.  I feel pretty sure these Tigers will rebound from this CovCath track meet.  43 rushes for 490 yards equals 11.5 yards per rush.  Ouch!

Beechies will be fine. The next game that they will be pushed is the state semifinals? Plenty of time to shore up the defense.

I think you are correct and even that far into the playoffs there won’t be a ground game like CovCath’s.

I've never understood what it means when people say this. We beat Simon Kenton last week, does that mean the Simon Kenton staff was "outcoached" by our staff. What exactly qualifies as being outcoached?

Yeah I agree ouch! Danville had some studs on that team that year!

Who was out for Beechwood?

Fryman and Erdman did not play at all.  There was a few banged up that were limited time to time, but those two were not playing.

Do you know the last time we had two 1k yard rushers on the same team? Cash and Gaiser might do that before the end of the regular reason.

I was talking to one of the members of the stats team...doesn't look like we have anything on record, currently.

2021: Reid Hummel 915 Preston Agee 878
2006: Brandon Brown 1,023 Brent Buckley 845

I can't really think of a time where we had a strong enough DUO of running backs to really look at multiple people rushing for 1000+ in a season, plus Coach Eviston is really the first coach to have used the quarterback as much as a runner as he has. Fowee and Caple and then Fowee and Madden would have been capable of getting 1000 yards a piece, but Jarod Kees was really just too strong of a passing quarterback to rush the ball that much. In 1994, Galen Healey was really the primary ball carrier with fullback John Dailey running in must-get yardage situations plus some running by QB Kevin Cogswell. In 1993 Mitchell Jobe was the primary rusher. In 1991 and 1992 it was Jude Hoffman. In 1988 we had more of an air assault team with Hladon as QB, but Dan Ruh was the main rusher, with Dave McGee adding in some rushing as needed. In 1997 the big rushers were Mike Woolf and Dan Ruh.

Beechwood hasn't given up this many rushing yards in a long, long time.  Makes me think back to the 2003 state title game when Danville gashed them for 500 yards behind Charles Penix and Kelvin Turner.
