Transfer Portal and NIL

It is amazing listening to games and hearing how many new players these schools seem to have. When Coastal Carolina has a tight end from Notre Dame, a running back from New Mexico, and several guys formerly in Power Five programs show up in beautiful downtown Conway SC( 15 miles from the ocean lol) it tells me the dynamic has changed.

Undoubtedly and it’s here to stay.

Kentucky has had several players to enter the portal. Dane Key, Sage Dawson, Tommy Zeismer, Khamari Anderson, Courtland Ford, KeyShawn Silver.

Cats have landed/flipped Cameron Miller that was a Wisconsin commit.

They also flipped Minnesota safety Grant Grayton as well.

You think it's changed, you have seen anything yet when profit sharing takes place next year. There is no such thing as a student athlete any longer. The college game has become a farm system for the NFL. The college game I knew as a kid no longer exists.

From 247Sports:

According to sources around college football, Mensah received a deal from Duke that is believed to pay him $8 million over two years, according to CBS Sports’ John Talty and Chris Hummer.

Get a $200,000 degree, invest half of what you earn and then retire shortly after graduation. Or until you find a job that suits you and isn't too demanding.

That's crazy...and it's going to get crazier.

That is a lot of money.  And Duke of all places.

I wonder how long it will be before the powers that be attempt to step in and blow this up for the players.

I'm not sure legally how they can blow it up. Once the court ruled they could get NIL, it kicked off the wild west of college sports. Even if they make them employees with salary caps, you'll still have players doing "NIL Endorsements" on the side.

It'll go like this, "Come to ol' State U, we'll pay you a million dollars from our salary cap and the local "business" community will guarantee you another two million if you sign with State U."

Regulate it in some way is more precise.   Or, I am very interested to see how it evolves.   And I am all for all the players getting as much money as they can.

He'd take a pay cut as a rookie in the NFL lol.

Who would you recommend regulate this? The NCAA? They have no backbone to do anything. The Universities? They are competing for the same kids now. The Power 4 Conferences? 2 of those are already taking a back seat to the Power 2.

I think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with regards to how much these kids can make. I read somewhere that Arch Manning would be taking a pay cut to go to the NFL, now that my friend is plan asinine.

It sounds like the same with Mensah on taking a pay cut in the NFL.

I think the players need a union to preserve all the rights they have right now.   At the same time no matter if it is a players union or some other third party, I think the players will end up getting screwed.

Finally, I am not recommending the regulation (other than a true players union).  My point is I think the powers that be will try to force something because almost overnight all the power (and money) is going to the players at the expense of those same powers that be.

A union sounds like a good way to go, especially to ensure the players do not get screwed over. I would also suggest from a school's standpoint, that instead of NLI, that players be required to sign a year-to-year contract. We have watched as the bowl season has become a joke. To ensure that players play in the bowl game, they have the contract, or they forfeit their NIL and profit sharing from the school. I also like what Coach Prime did for his two players who will be high draft picks in the next NFL draft, by getting insurance to cover them, God forbid, should an injury happen in the bowl game.
