I disagree with you already.  No on restricting the players with a year to year contract.  No way I am going away from independently negotiating my own NIL deal to entering into a contract with a school.  Hard pass.   I do think the NCAA could change the times of when the portal is open.  On the rest of bowl season, it is a complete joke and an antiquated money grab.   The rest of the bowls need to stop after this year.  You either make the playoffs or you move on down the road.

So, there can be a restriction on coaches (buyout), but not on players? I think there has to be some form of guidelines on the players. Even the NFL, MLB, NBA has contracts on players. Otherwise, it's simply a freefall, there has to be some form of guidelines, restrictions, whatever you want to call it on the players. If not, the players (17,18,19-year-old kids) are running the asylum, and who thinks that is a good idea. These players already have agents, that I'm certain are not working for free, and are doing all they can to protect the players, I just think there has to be something in place that also protects the Universities as well. 

Regardless of what I or anyone else thinks, there is no such thing as a "student athlete" anymore. I certainly agree that the portal has to change on when it can be open, right now coaches, especially in the playoffs, are at a total disadvantage with regards to the portal. 

I don't know how I feel about discarding the rest of the bowls. I do believe that those extra days of practice help, and teams, that don't make the playoffs, have to have some reward on a decent season. So, team that finishes 9-3 but doesn't make the playoffs should have some type of reward on their season.  I agree that teams with a 6-6 record, need to pack their stuff up and get ready for spring ball. 

NIL is going to ruin college athletics. Very shortly there will be no benefit to watching college sports over professional. 

They either figure out how to regulate this nonsense or say goodbye to the average consumer watching college athletics. 

Coaches have been making bank for decades and I would never try to restrict players because suddenly players have it better than coaches for the first time ever.  Additionally, football players are already under mandate to stay in college for three years.   I have never agreed with that.  It should be one year just like basketball.  I am not saying many players would be ready after one year, I am saying three years should not be required. 

At the top level I agree there are no student-athletes.  Just well paid athletes that have a nuisance in their life called 9 credit hours. 

I think we have a faulty system now trying to marry "college football" with professionally paid athletes.  

Something (other than restricting players) is going to have to change or the NIL is going to ruin high level "college athletics."

I think it is time that the NFL start a G-League/Triple-A League and let the colleges get back to education and student-athletes.

Personally, I think the horse is out of the barn, and there will be no way to get that horse back in the barn, unless there is someone who has the respect of the universities, and the respect of coaches and players alike. Who can bring common sense (something that is lacking in our world, not just in athletics) to this crazy time we are living in. 

I certainly don't want to sound like I'm against the players getting paid or having rights, what I am saying is while they are getting paid and have more rights now than ever, there still has to be some kind of regulations and restrictions. 

No where is there a commitment to an organization. The days of a Cal Ripken, Derek Jeter, or a Tim Duncan, Reggie Miller, John Stockton are over. Players now are basically athletic (a word I don't think I need to use in any forum) available to the highest bidder. In my mind that is what we are seeing right now in college with NIL and so to be profit sharing.

I prefer to say the genie out of the bottle. ?

The FBS will not be part of the NCAA three years from now. They will set up their own football division and manage/supervise themselves apart from the NCAA.

I guess, in somewhat thinking outside of the box, if the issue for the portal is to allow athletes to get to their new school in the spring. Then perhaps, and again this is outside of the box, but perhaps they move up the start dates for college football by 3-4 weeks. Then the portal dates wouldn't interfere with CFP games.

I agree there needs to be a comprehensive approach.
