Folks, this is a big one. Last year the Aces snuck by crosstown foe Owensboro 33 to 28 behind 279 passing yards and two passing touchdowns by Brady Atwell. And so far this year, Owensboro Catholic is absolutely rolling. They are 3 - 0 but really haven't been challenged. Owensboro should change that. They are 1-2 but their two losses are to mighty CAL and Bowling Green. They obliterated Daviess County in week 3. Trevor Delacey, Evan Hampton, and Kingston Dillard highlight the Red Devil offense. Linebacker Ty Ashley has anchored their defense. For the Aces, Vince Carrico is doing his thing on both sides of the ball while Nick Sims pilots the Aces secondary.

This should be fun.

If this game is to be won by the Devils it will have to be through the air. Forcing a run game in Hampton that isn’t there will be the downfall of the Devils. The strength in Aces defense will be the front 7. I say attack the Aces DB’s. Line Ray, Dillard, Hampton, Morris, Kimbrell up at WR and go through the air all night.
I expect a high scoring back and forth match. Which ever team makes fewer mistakes wins this one.

Aces favored - it’s at Steele as well.  But I will caution you to remember last year, OHS in big time rebuild, OC best team ever - Aces win in final seconds with Atwell scoring being pulled in by his WR Carrico.  O loses 33-28 I believe.  OC graduated Carrico but younger brother brother is solid.  Also TE/LB Crowe transfers for his senior season from O to OC.  Winstead moves to Jacksonville Florida.   I would favor O if those 2 remained.  I really don’t get leaving your final season to a private school in your own town after you’re already a star.  To each their own.  If Owensboro prepares for OC like it did BG, if they show now no heart, or if they just play for a moral victory, they will get beat 14 or more.  If they come ready to hit and play like a Red Devil team, good game plan I-think they will win or it will be tight.   I’ll say O has more heart.   Swanagan and the Bryant kid are back and Chadyn Morris is a monster on the outside and was back against DC.  He was WR1 (until Dillard took over).  Plenty of good options now no excuses.

Devils 35-27.

Believe he will be a difference maker in this 1. Good hands and speed, but where he seperates himself over the others is outside blocking. That should help the Devils bouce it to the outside with Hampton better. If played right I don’t see how OC can stop OHS’s offense but the same can be said for the Aces offense. Crowe will be nearly unstoppable against the Devils. He averages a touchdown every 2 times he touches the ball. And that’s been with limited touches due to blowouts. If he get the ball 10 times this game he probably scores 3 of them. So many different unexpected pieces to this game that it’s hard to judge it from last years game. I have faith the Devils can pull this off but can also see it getting ugly fast if the defense doesn’t wrap up.

Anything can happen in this one, but I’m going to take the Red Devils in a close one. Those first couple of games they got punched in the mouth but showed some fight, the Aces haven’t been tested yet and the speed may cause some problems for them offensively.

OB 36 OC 34

Morris caught 2 passes against DC - 1 near the goal line for a TD (quick out) and the other was a WR screen that he broke several tackles and summersaulted (sp?) at the goal line after about a 20 yards scamper and they marked him at the 1.  I'd say he's ready to go.

I think you have to play like Boyle and CAL if you are O - Hampton and Morris on defense some.  OHS had a star runing back years ago that also rushed they QB on passing downs.  From my recollection he led the state in sacks or they thought so.

I agree especially in close/big games. Why have your best athletes sitting the sideline?

Looking to be a wet tropical storm night for this game!!!  Passing could be a huge issue for both teams.
I’m thinking this could be a pound it out in the ground with the lines playing a crucial roll!  Who has the advantage if this plays out?

Great question so far I’d have to go with Aces based off their physicality. Haven’t seen much of a run game for the Devils this year.

If the Devils beat the Aces does that lower expectations of a 2A state title for the Aces?

I wouldn’t think it would.

OHS played toe to toe with Mayfield in a scrimmage and was a couple of bad calls away from beating the clear and away best team in 3A. OHS has plenty of talent. Unlike most years where the Aces come into this game as underdogs they probably don’t this year. But if OHS considers themselves a Top tier 5A program in the state (and their recent success says they are) they should never feel like they are the underdog in this one.

I think it will be another great game with OC tacking on a score late and pulling away 35-20.

I have hesitated commenting much on this game.  I wanted to see how the weather was actually going to proceed with precip predictions for the game.  Well, according to the weather channel it will rain, as expected (80% chance), but the nightly total is about a quarter of an inch, which IMO is manageable; not ideal, but manageable.  If it were raining more, I would definitely take Owensboro, as I think their weapons are a little better for those kinds of conditions and dampens Atwell's effect.  And I do think the weather will be a factor, but much less than I first thought.

So, I'm going to go with Catholic playing at home, but I wouldn't be surprised with a closer score that I have below or if the Red Devils pull this one out:

OCath 28

Owensboro 21
