6A Bryan Station (0-2) vs 5A Bowling Green Purples (1-1)

Opening Round of the 2024 LCA Bowl at Lexington Christian High School!

The LCA Bowl will “Run it back” as they say on the playground in 2024.  These two teams (along with Pikeville vs LCA in the Night Cap) have only met once and it was on an absolutely sweltering afternoon last August where Bryan Station remained resilient; got a HUGE turnover late in the game and proceeded to move to the ball into field goal position and kicked the winning field goal basically as time expired to defeat Bowling Green 38-35 in a whale of a ballgame.    

Bryan Station Defenders Information

The Bryan Station Defenders (Station) come into this game somewhat similar to last season with the same record (0-2) vs 2 of the very top teams in the whole State (Trinity and at Boyle County).  Nearly all teams would have the same record with those opponents if not all.  Also similar to last season, Station comes into this game somewhat “desperate” for a win as 0-3 is just a bigger hole to climb out of.  They did just that last season, playing with a lot of heart and refusing to go away and earned a big win, which led to a 5-game win streak and ultimately a trip to Kroger Field in the 6 State Championship game where they fell to the always tough Trinity Shamrocks 41-20.  I know Coach Hawkins and company are planning on nothing less on Friday afternoon.

Station graduated some memorable players, but the roster is not dried up at all.  Offensively, Station is led by SR RB Kalen “Jaws” Washington who is a very tough physical runner and SR QB James Davis.  Defensively, the Station LBs are very good in SRs Taeandre Clark and Keelan Adams.  But playing the Shamrocks and Rebels will cause you great stress.  Can the Defenders shake those 2 tough losses off and bring the fight to the Purples?  We shall see.

Bowling Green Purples Information

Bowling Green comes into this game getting on the positive side of the win/loss column for the first time this season defeating a good Owensboro Red Devil squad 35-14.  BG ultimately got a stop on Owensboro’s opening possession and drove down and opened the scoring but would only lead 7-0 after 1 quarter.  But the flood gates opened in the second with the Purples hitting their stride to 28 more points and starting the running clock right before halftime. 

SR QB Deuce Bailey with a huge game and 4 TDs.  And the BG Oline played really well.

On defense, a collective effort to slow down O’s star RB Evan Hampton was pretty successful, but I look for Station to try to get Washington on track early and often.  Going to be really entertaining.

I also wanted to spotlight SR DT Ryan Watt, who led the BG D (along with JR LB Montez Trussell) with 12 tackles (4 tackles for loss) and 2 sacks vs a stout Frederick Douglass team.  Great job!

LCA Bowl Game Preview and Information

Kickoff will be at 6:00 pm Eastern Time at LCA High School in Lexington, Kentucky.  Game time forecast:  78 degrees and beautiful!   

Bryan Station is a good football team regardless of their record and I admire anyone courageous enough to schedule teams like T and Boyle to get better.  I also have a ton of respect for Coach Hawkins.  For as many places as he has been he has done such a good job at each one of them and perhaps the best is his current stint at Station.  I have a feeling Station will hang their hat on their running game this year.  And the Defenders will go as far as Washington and their Oline can take them.  So, I’m looking for Station to try to pound the ball at BG and see what happens; throw in a few passes if needed, but not 50 percent of the time. 

For Bowling Green, the 2023 LCA Bowl proved very disappointing and I’m sure the Purples have circled this game to try to avenge last season’s setback vs a very talented Defender squad.    Secondly, as much as the 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th quarters were off vs Frederick Douglass, I felt they were on for the Owensboro game.  BG needs to come out confident and simply take whatever Station gives them on offense and perhaps establish a little run game themselves to control the game especially early on, where I think Station could be vulnerable mentally after two mentally taxing games.  Defensively, it's all about putting pressure on the Station run game and QB.  Do that and everything else takes care of itself.

Going to be a fun one; looking forward to the less heat and humidity right now!

Taking BG in this one but wouldn't be surprised if BS won. 

Tall task but I think the Purple Train got started this past Friday night vs the Red Devils and will continue this upcoming Friday afternoon. Can the Defenders “defend” the passing arm of Mr. Bailey?

I'm guessing the Purples avenge the last second loss of last season and will be clicking on all cylinders in this game. 
After this game, our younger guys gets lots of reps for a few weeks so our starters know that this is their game to turn it up a few notches.

Wow!  Opening the season against arguably the #1 team in 6A, 4A and 5A.  Tough stretch for any team.  If it doesn’t kill them, it should prepare them for the remainder of the season.

Massey ratings have it Bowling Green 34-24.

Must win for Station.  I expect them to bounce back, but not an answer for Duece Bailey.  BG cannot stop the run so Station will keep it close.  IMO

The Sporting Times streaming link for the BG feed has been taken down.

I think that was because it had the wrong times on it (Central Time Zone to Eastern Time Zone kind of thing).  I feel confident it will still be on Sporting Times, but it isn't up there as of this moment.
