CCH’s top receiver is out for at least a month so time for Bradshaw and Brooks to step up.

@Bluesport ...Oliver Link? I saw a picture of the number of guys Cov Cath had standing in street clothes on the sideline for the scrimmage, but didn't get a full list of who was who. I didn't hear Link mentioned on any passing plays, so I'm guessing that may be who you're referencing?

Luke Lampe will probably be another one to look for in the slot. He's a speedster when he gets into space. Mac Cogswell was a really nice WR for the freshman team last year, too, so I wouldn't be shocked to see him get some varsity reps. Might expect seeing a little more passing with TE targets with both Nick Krallman & Tate Kruer there as options. I believe one of Logan Sanning's touchdowns on Friday night was on a swing pass with him running out of the backfield, too.

The early regular season is definitely going to be a test for us between breaking in a new QB, new starting RB's and then having depend on the next few guys to step up with our one veteran WR out for the time being.

CWB - You do a great job covering the Blue Colonels in an informative and unbiased manner. You represent CovCath well! I have not been to any Ryle practices or either scrimmage game, so I do not

Like what's going on with Ryle in what regard?

Their offense.

Their offense.

They're going to have Landon Lorms back at WR, and he causes fits. 1023 yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 games last year...so a touchdown a game and almost 80 yards receiving per game. They get their #2 WR back too, Dylan Lee. He had almost 800 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games last year, so also a touchdown and about 80 yards per game. So making sure Nathan Verax has time in the pocket to get them the ball is a major focus, for sure.

I know I didn't get to watch them after their season opener against Cov Cath, but Logan Verax was solely responsible for keeping Ryle's offense on the field a dozen times over last year against the Colonels with his scrambling and his ability to find passing outlets in the midst of being taken to the turf. So will Ryle's pass protection give Verax 2.0 the time he needs to get the ball away? And is Nathan the heads-up scrambler that Logan was?

Last year the Raider offense was 74% passing and 26% rushing. I think that's something Coach Engler absolutely HAS to change about his offense. Logan Verax was the #1 rusher at QB and had 456 yards rushing - much of that on scrambles. Gabe Savage was next in rushing yards with 380 yards and 7 touchdowns. Dude is a BEAST so I think they're going to have to rely on Gabe more this year, even as much as he's putting out on defense. I think the run game for Ryle is the make-or-break issue for their offense moreso than ever this year.

Honestly, I think I would like to see Gaiser more in the slot position.  He has good hands, and it gets him into open space immediately where he excels and will allow him to make the big plays they are looking for.   Putting him at RB hamstrings him and puts him into positions he's not his best.

Does Ryle stream their games?

No, they do not.

Yes, Link is out with an injury. McEvoy isn’t playing this year.

I mostly agree. I think you’re aiming for 12-15 touches between carries and catches and giving the heavier between the tackles carries to Bessler/Sanning/Cash.

He’s definitely not an Owen Leen type you’re going to give 20 carries a game to.

This series record stands at 13 wins to 7 in Covington Catholic's favor. Coach Eviston is 6-2 against the Raiders while Coach Engler is 3-6 against the Colonels. Ryle's last win over the Colonels came back in 2016 when the Raiders beat Cov Cath for a third straight time.

Headed into this season, one of Coach Eviston's biggest tasks has been figuring out which quarterback to tag as QB1 from his loaded bullpen. If Friday night's scrimmage against North Laurel is the biggest key indicator, then we'll see Cash Harney starting behind center this Friday in Union. Harney spent half of the season his freshman year as starting QB at Beechwood, and then spent last year as starting safety for the Colonels in addition to being first backup to starting QB Evan Pitzer. The first quarter of Cov Cath's scrimmage on Friday gave the team some time to get any early jitters out of the way. Once they got that out of their system, the offense really kicked it into gear with Dylan Gaiser's electric kick-returning skills and their ability to pound the ball on the ground and quickly get vertical passing plays to move the ball down the field. Cov Cath put 21 points on the board in the second quarter of the scrimmage, alone. Besides Harney, look to see Dylan Gaiser, Logan Sanning and Andrew Bessler running out of the backfield, and then they will have plenty of passing targets in tight ends Nick Krallman & Tate Kruer, and wide receivers Luke Lampe, Donovan Bradshaw, Oliver Link, and Mac Cogswell.

On the defensive side of things, several starters sat for the Colonels in the scrimmage to make sure some pre-season bumps and bruises would be fully healed for Friday night's season lid-lifter, but Tate Kruer, Andrew Bessler, Owen Pitzer and Nick Krallman will be leading the linebacking corps, with Logan Sanning, Dylan Gaiser, and Oliver Link showing up in the defensive backfield and linemen Mason Dietz, Spencer Clukey and Jonny Lind helping stymie the opposing offense up front. The defense was VERY potent against the run game on Friday night, so the biggest question will be how they can stack up against Ryle's QB newcomer Nathan Verax and the Coach Engler's run and gun offensive style.

Current weather forecast for Friday is looking to partly cloudy with a high of 86°, and temps are on the rise through the weekend, so it's gonna be a hot one!

If these guys are good early (they will be as JRs and SRs), I think the defense gets real tough quickly with the talent at the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense

Spot on! Bessler is listed on his Hudl account at 6'0" 200 lbs. and benches 285 lbs. and has some serious speed.  He would be a load to bring down.

I’m not sure what to expect from the team this year, and I’m particularly intrigued how the offense will look after losing so much production. Ideally the offense will gel quickly, but this is the first game and there may be an adjustment period. With that being said, this team certainly has talent and I expect them to showcase that.

I don’t think this will be an easy game by any means, but Cov Cath should get it done. Go Colonels!!

I know I've beaten this drum a lot, but if Cash is starting at QB, and playing a good deal at safety, I'd be VERY physical with him when Ryle's offense was on the field.  They have a big back that can deliver a pounding, and over time, that will certainly start to take its toll.

That and once I figured out what coverage CCH was in I would make sure to engage him in some deep, deep coverage.
