Congrats to the Raiders on an exciting walk-off win after being down 4-0 going into the bottom of the fifth. An excellent season falls short for Krumps' crew. Tough loss for the Blue Colonels. 1
1992Rebel Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Exciting win for the Raiders. Frustrating and most likely controversial loss for the Colonels. Up 2 with 2 outs in the 6th, a very nice looking curveball thrown by Dieref called a ball. I think everyone but the 2 people that mattered (the ump and the batter) thought it was strike 3 and end of the inning. Next pitch was a two run double and game was tied. next inning the Ryle students were allowed to blow a horn while pitcher was pitching. Is that legal? Looked as if the 3rd base umpire asked for it to be removed and is was not and the go ahead runner was walked. Quick question: Why do football and basketball get other region referees for their Region playoffs but baseball gets local guys? Seems like that might eliminate any potential bias that might exist for or against a program. Not making any accusations, just wondering. 1 1
RedHawk Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Tough loss for the Colonels, hang your heads high boys after a great season! 31-5. District champs. Colonels came out hot hitting and Bradley Zekl was smooth and did his job. Thought he looked like he still had more in the tank. Charlie Dieruf took the tough loss, Raiders were hitting him up. Colonels lose a lot in pitching with 7 Seniors graduating. Zekl (Hanover) ends his season 10-0. Dieruf (Miami U) 1-2 and 5 Saves. Wagner 7-1 1 Save. Saturday will be a great game Dixie Vs Ryle. 1

The air horn blown by the Ryle dugout was the most unsportsmanship like thing I’ve seen in awhile. And they kept doing it. Over and over. Why in the world would the head ump not take that away? Does not seem legal at all. They all discussed it and the horn was allowed to continue to be blown during the wind up and pitch. I also was wondering how we get the same umps we’ve had all season. Agree on the strike 3, even the Ryle faithful, who were happy, seemed crazy surprised by that call. 1

TheConch Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Time for Krumps to call it. He can’t get out of the region. A lot of people fed up with the “well we win 20+ games a season”, lose to Beechwood, and now this. Thanks for the memories but he should have been given the forced retirement when he retired from teaching a few years back. It’s time for a new face and fresh voice in that program.

Be careful what you ask for. While I understand their recent lack of region titles is frustrating, the reality is outside of Luke Maile's senior year well over a decade ago, I don't know that they've had the best team in the region. Baseball is a funny game, especially in a single elimination tourney when you can run up on someone's number 1 guy. Yes, some of Krump's in-game decisions are quite old school, but I don't know that a different coach would have gotten better results in the time since their last region championship. Winning 20 games year after year IS hard to do. To say he's got to go after losing to a really good Ryle team that will likely win region and could make some noise at state is a little harsh.

I'm not sure that with the history of that program that they wouldn't get at least a few high level candidates. But what happens when whoever they hire doesn't win region for another 5 years? Even if you do win there, people seem to get impatient..just ask Eddie Eviston and Rurthsatz. You've also got the unique problem with the teachers retirement system, which would likely prevent (or least make them think twice) any established public school teacher from taking the job. Unless Krumps commits a crime against humanity, he should be able to coach there until he's ready to leave. 1

All fair points. But it’s time, fresh face, new blood. He’s had a heckuva career, but I know many in the CovCath baseball community, much like all Park Hills Mafia members, they are tired of the same old, same old. Build a statue, throw his name on a plaque, give him a ‘Lynn Ray’ rock, even name the pressbox after him, but it’s time. I know of at least one coach down the street that would have gotten much more out of the athletes and teams that Krumps did nothing with. He’s had the talent to win, he can’t win the big games, and he certainly can’t win at Thomas More Stadium. His stubborn old ways aren’t winning any type of titles. Zero regional titles since 2005. It’s time.

In all those other years, there have been more talented teams in the region. I'm guessing you're talking about Kevin Gray as the other coach, but he's had some very talented teams at Beechwood, none of which I'd say have over achieved. I agree he's a very good coach, but he just got beat in the region tourney by a team that was 8 games under .500 for the year. Highlands and Beechwood have owned the 9th region for most of the last decade and that's not because Krumps can't coach anymore.

I don’t disagree with that, I’m not saying CovCath has had the best athletes/teams, I’m saying you give Kevin Gray the same teams Krumps has had, he still rattles off a couple regional titles at CovCath since 2005. He definitely doesn’t go, what Krumps commonly says, “wearing the collar” aka ZERO.
