The Battle of Newport in 2023 brings us a Top 10 Class 1A showdown. Both teams are coming off the bye week into this matchup.
Newport Central Catholic sits at 2-4 on the season, while Newport comes in with the opposite record of 4-2. The winner of this matchup will most likely lock up the districts number 1 seed.  Many questions coming into this matchup.

Who wins this matchup? Does Newport Central Catholic flex in this matchup? Does Newport get its first win since 1999?

    NCC up 9-6 at half

  • NCC is very banged up even though they are coming off a bye week.  QB Kolton Smith will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair some damage to his foot suffered in the Raceland

I lived through those days, so it’s been burned into my brain. He was one heck of a coach.

And a better person!!

Poll is running close with a 12/10 advantage New Cath.

I’m not sure who be starting QB for my Breds Friday night. But as was said before Welch won’t be short on touches. If I’m Newport I’d be loading rhe box and playing man coverage on the receivers.

That being said, how athletic are the Newport DBs to play that style. Also how fast are their receivers, should they gamble on defense and get burned? NewCath was struggling offensively from the first game, losing a QB with a cannon for an arm doesn’t help either. Good luck to whom ever the starter is. Good luck both teams. Keep the Bell on the Hill!!!

I am reading the above and your support for NewCath...however, you picked Newport as the winner.   This is a must win game for NewCath, we are looking for a more inspired team to show up and play Friday Night.  Go Breds!

I can still root for my team but be honest as well. It's nothing personal homie.

As to the bolded part above, the Newport secondary is plenty athletic, and the Cats have played a few "run first" teams this season where the game plan is just what you describe. We shall see what they come up with tonight.

Welch was always going to get his share of the load as he is such a dominant runner.  If the Breds have any threat of a passing game with their backup QB, that will make him that much more effective.

Going to be a great night for football!!

Same score end of 3.

NewCath 9

Newport 6

Newport drove about 80 yards and could not get in on 4th and goal from I think about the 7.
