The Battle For Colonel Highway

The northern Kentucky Colonel Classic will see its half-hundredth edition this week in Park Hills.

Cov Cath is currently on a 16-game win streak - the second longest streak in the history of this 48 year old series. The Blue Colonels also own the longest win streak at 22 years, lasting from 1977 in the third-ever game between the two teams through the 1998 season. In the 49 previous games, Dixie has had 7 wins, including one shutout, to Cov Cath's 42 wins and 11 shutouts.

Last year Dixie rolled out a new offensive style under first-year head coach Pat Burke, with rapid-fire plays, oftentimes snapping the ball less than a second after it had been set by the officials. Cov Cath's defense was knocked back to their heels in the earliest of Dixie's offensive possessions, but then the Blue Colonels adjusted and pulled away in a 47-14 win.

This year Dixie heads into the matchup with a 1-2 record on the season, and Cov Cath has a 3-0 record. The Red Colonels have a 29-19 loss to 6A Simon Kenton back from Week 1 and then a 49-48 loss to 2A Beechwood last week from a double-overtime thriller. Their one win is a 33-8 win over Hughes (OH) from Week 2. The Blue Colonels have put together three straight wins in their first three games, beating 6A Ryle 37-22 in their Week 1 home opener, then beating 5A Highlands 35-21 in Week 2 in Fort Thomas. Then most recently last week they beat the 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers 50-12 on the road.

If Dixie comes out like they did last week game it will be a long night. They have to keep control of the ball and get some points on the board in the 1st quarter. 
Rice, Beach, and Kriger need to be more involved in the offense not just this week but the rest of the season.

CCH has too many weapons for most teams to guard agents. CCH by 3 or 4 TDS.

Rice is a stud. I've seen Dixie twice this year and I'm leaving each game saying that he should be more involved in the offense. I would think that you want to get your best athletes on the field.

I’m interested to see how good Rice is for Dixie. If he can generate some pressure as a blitzer or off the edge, maybe we don’t make it look as easy as we did vs SK. 

It was good to see we ran a bunch of counter last week. It’s a good start to hopefully being a little more diversified in the run game on offense. 

Regardless, I expect for a big CCH win.

More often than not he is blitzing out of a LB position and getting good pressure. I think teams struggle to contain him because he comes from different spots and doesn't hit the same place on the O-Line over and over again.

Dixie's defense is very much feast or famine, but they are basically successful every time Rice gets pressure on the QB 

Hopefully Dixie added some Sweeps to the playbook. Seems like every play has been a dive or a go route. 

Have to go with the Ft. Wright Colonels on this one.  Plus, I don’t want Cov Cath to be angry for the next week.

Rice will be the best player on the field. Won’t equal a win. CCH by 3 TDs
