KHSAA rules on Somerset's controversial week one game

Featured Replies

If you’ve never officiated you wouldn’t understand how common it is to be followed to your car or have people yelling things at you while walking to your car. I’ll say they aren’t yelling “peace and love”. People get over emotional and 99% of them don’t know the basic definition of holding.

I say kudos to the KHSAA in this instance.

  • As a long time retired official and then an observer I am really glad to see the KHSAA make that decision. The only way we see improvement is by oversight and addressing situations like this one.

I think there is a huge difference in missing a call and not knowing the rules for the situation. Calls are missed in every game, there shouldn't be a play missed because no one on the crew knew the r

In reading the article it was not a judgement call it was a totally misinterpretation of the rule for an inadvertent whistle. First off the whistle should have never been blew, but the mistake was tha

Punished by being forced to sit out a week, and disqualified from playoffs. Seems fitting for this situation.  Missing subjective calls; Refs should get the benefit of the doubt everyday and twice on Sunday. However Incompetence should never be tolerated. As far as you being walked out to your car… I wonder what happened during the game to garner such reaction.

kudos to the people owning the mistake and holding the crew responsible. If we’re gonna hold Parents responsible and punished for their behavior, Refs should be held to the same standard, imo.

LOL, you wonder what happened? Really?  the same thing that happens all over America EVERY WEEK. Someone, somewhere doesn't like the fact that you called or didn't call a penalty/foul.

Well yes, I wonder what happened. I wasn’t there. Generally speaking, it usually it boils down to either ignorant Parents living through their kids and get overly emotional or incompetent Refs who don’t follow protocol like the example above. Both happen.

I’d say it almost 100% of the time over zealous parents that don’t know the rules, the new points of emphasis, and the “did it directly effect the play” approach. Plus they are very emotional bc it involves their child or team they are rooting for. I’ve had coaches at all levels yell at me after games, even after showering after a Friday night game. People get crazy.

Oh I agree, People ARE crazy lol. And there are definitely more crazy Parents than incompetent Refs.

Wow, you're missing the WHOLE POINT. No high school official should get cursed at and spit on because of a bad call. REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE CALL IS. If we miss a call, that's bad, and believe me, if we blow a call we HATE IT. But these guys officiating 99% of the time have families and work full time jobs, and can't attend classes and train for hours a week like pro officials do. And  believe me, you don't do it for the paltry amount of money they pay you

Point to where I said officials deserve to be disrespected? Please don’t put words in my mouth. I’m not missing any point. The points are Refs we’re incompetent in this instance and the KHSAA owned it.
You don’t seem to like Refs getting punished for obvious incompetence.

This thread isn’t about overly emotional Parents.

Sit in the stands and listen to the fans comment on the game. The lack of knowledge is stunning. And those are the people complaining about officials, playing time, play calling, etc. All the basic rules they don't know. It is hard to sit there and not correct them about some comment on almost every play.

I stand by myself away from the crowd. It’s to hard to keep y mouth shut when I hear fans yelling about rules they have no clue about. In this instance the crew does need to be held accountable. They just ran off the field, they needed to get together and discuss what happened.

But I do like all the back and forth because it could potentially help fans j ow the rules and why they’re called/not called.

Yes, Parents can be outta control. But this thread has nothing to do with some Parents and their lack of understanding/emotional control. Put the responsibility where it lies in this case. Parents didn’t make these refs run off the field and not discuss the play.
Kudos to the KHSAA for owning it!!
Much respect!!

Should the entire crew be punished? Definitely the referee/white hat/ crew chief. Official who blew the whistle was probably a newer official and trust me will never forget it.

What's your definition of incompetent?  Does interpreting a rule incorrectly make a ref incompetent.  And regardless of the reason, NO ONE should fear for their safety after a game.  NO ONE should follow and harass an official.  Yes, a missed call can impact a game, but so do the numerous mistakes and blown assignments committed by every team every week.  It's high school football, the play on the field isn't perfect and the officiating won't be either.

Perhaps I missed this in an earlier post, but to me this is purely a training issue with whatever association assigned this crew.  The fact that not one of these officials stepped up and said, we interpreted this incorrectly AT THE TIME OF THE PLAY, makes me believe none of them knew the correct call to make.  Or, even worse, were afraid to step up and correct their peers.   That is a training issue for the association.  Somebody has to catch that.  "Punishing" the officials is absolutely the wrong look here.  If there was no intent to miss the call, and I'm more than certain there was not, why even use the term "punish?"  Fix the problem and try to use it as additional training for the entire association.  Owning the problem is noble, yes, but affixing blame where it may not be warranted is pretty weak in my opinion.

I worked with a guy that was an official in Ohio for over 20 years. He told me one day that most of the time it is what an official "thinks" or "believes" happened. He said that there may be a definition for something, but it's up to the official to make the determination. He went  on to say that many times officials could not agree on a holding call.  Not sure if his views are the majority, but he is the only high school football official that I have talked to on a one on one basis.
