JCPS staggered school start times

Not calling you out out Deuce, but any suggestions?   They did it for a reason right?

They changed it to cut the number of bus routes which was supposed to improve transportation to and from school. This plan CLEARLY did the opposite of that.

A few people in control made a stupid decision and thousands of people have/will pay the price for it. It’s incredible to me that JCPS thought THOUSANDS of parents could just change their work schedule to accommodate new school start times, some as late as 9:40am.

The start times didn’t need to be changed, they just needed more drivers. This wasn’t the solution.

Hard to really place the blame on anyone.  If you can't get people to do the job, this stuff happens.

JCPS has cancelled school the rest of the week.

A huge part of cutting down the routes is because there aren’t drivers for majority of the routes that were cut. I know you acknowledged that, but what other option did they have?

They had transportation issues, obviously. But this was the solution? It is extremely troubling that a plan that has flopped so incredibly was ever implemented. This reeks of a plan that was pushed by a few for an agenda, IMO. What that agenda may be, I have no idea.

AT WORST, they should have left it how it was.

A had a friend that is an Administrator in JCPS tell me "Maybe this disaster will be what the State needs to force JCPS to split into smaller districts."

I agree this idea stinks, but they literally didn’t have the drivers to leave it as it was.

It’s not as simple as “hire more drivers”. I’m sure that was step 1.

I agree that more drivers is the answer.  I just don't know how they're going to make it happen.

This just sounds awful. Can you imagine a bus driver's work day now with those staggered times? I wouldn't work a split shift like that for $50/hour. They obviously need more drivers, but how many people are going to willingly sign up for that insane schedule?

In talking with bus drivers, this is the biggest issue with trying to recruit people.  The split shift is not appealing for many.  Add in compensation, behavior, and regulatory issues compared to years past and it's not surprising that many districts in the face are facing bus driver shortages.

I'm not sure how to fix the issue either and I think it's more likely we see more and more schools shut down certain routes or just not offer bus service (since they aren't required to anyway).

This is where I think we are headed in a lot of places, sadly.

But Kentucky schools are required to do so if the student would have to walk more than a mile or there isn’t adequate and safe sidewalks for them… both would be the case for several in JCPS.

I thought that got revised several years ago and now the only students guaranteed of that transportation were students with special needs?  I know Danville outright cancelled routes a year or two ago and it was the responsibility of parents to get their students to school.

Edit:  Did some further digging and you are correct.  I wish some reports out there made the provisions clearer.
