Do we have any "plant based" eaters here on BGP?

Good genes, or darn lucky.  76, 260 and still going "fairly" strong.

Doesn't say that I don't drop dead tomorrow, which would be OK too, or be diagnosed with some terrible disease.  Eating my favorite foods is one of my pleasures of life, and at this stage, I'm not depriving myself to squeeze out a few more years, because I am quite aware that it will be all downhill from here.

I do occasionally get the urge to exercise, but then I lay down until the feeling passes.

How tall are you?

On exercise, buy a good pair of shoes and walk.

  • Good. More meat for the rest of us.

  • I do not do plant-based and that term can mean a lot of things. While there are some benefits, I have always felt it can devoid us of adequate protein and other valuable nutrients you cannot replicate

  • If you have good genes it won't matter, you will live a long time. If you have bad genetics it won't matter what you eat or how much exercise you get, you will simply extend your health issues.

I'm 6 Foot tall. and can still climb into some tight places from which we broadcast at EKU, and more recently the Mason County Fieldhouse.

I'm fairly active, especially during football and hoops season, and have no trouble getting into and out of a boat..  I can still walk up to the press box at Bellevue and Dayton (Try It), and make the trek from our press box at the MAC to the playing field and back with a detour to the concession stand and men's room rather effortlessly.

I enjoy my daily three-hour naps.

You should probably drop about 50 pounds.  I have been in both those press boxes, I like that Bellevue lets citizens use the facility to exercise, that would be a great place to "run" steps.

Sleep is good!

People who "eat clean" and exercise want there to be benefits because otherwise, what are they sacrificing for? Fat people living as long as them while eating everything they want would be a severe blow to the psyche of many.

Each person is different, and everyone has their own priorities. There are plenty of people who eat "bad" their entire life and still live well into their 70s and 80s. On the flipside, there are plenty of people who run 5 miles a day, eat clean and die at 60.

Diet and exercise has MANY benefits, of course. But I'm skeptical that it greatly prolongs life and/or keeps you from being sick.

I think the only way for each of to know is to do it.  I understand there is no way to individually measure life expectancy but if you feel better because of it then I think it is worth it.  I will add, I don't see it as a sacrifice but I understand most do.  To each their own for sure.

My dad use to take us to Bellevue stadium to run steps and laps for football even though we went to NewCath. He said it was ok bc his father in law was a Bellevue Grad (class of 1936) and still lived in Bellevue. Those steps are no joke.

I listened to an interview with John Sally, of Pistons fame, and he’s a vegan. His answer to why?, was “look how strong Gorrilas are, they don’t eat meat”. Of course they don’t drink beer either, but I’ve been curious about vegan diet. I do hate fruit and most veggies in a raw form. Good luck.

If you know what you are doing getting enough protein is not an issue.  Many of the biggest, strongest animals get all their protein from plants.  I will not be eating any of that beyond burger stuff, yuck.  I agree on being careful with processed foods.

Maybe a better way of stating what I plan on is to say I want to eliminate the majority of animal proteins in my diet and replace them with plant proteins.

Thanks for the heads up on Max and Dr. J, I will check them out.

And those animals also eat an amount unachievable by humans. Gorillas eat upwards of 40lbs of plants each day.

Watch it, JCVD already covered this one, lol.

I have a buddy that goes to Bellevue on occasion and he shares it on Facebook a lot.  I used to run the steps at serpentine wall but it is not an efficient use of my time and I have been in downtown Cincy a few times where I didn't feel safe so other than an occasional night at the Banks I steer clear.

I think we have talked about this movie before but either way if you are into sports (all of us I would assume) and you have at least a casual interest in "plant based eating" I highly recommend watching this movie on Netflix.  There are a bunch of stars in it.  Also, the website is a great resource for all things on this topic, really good stuff:

https://gamechangersmovie.com/

As demonstrated by the athletes and research featured in The Game Changers, switching to a diet centered around plants can yield significant performance advantages, providing optimal fuel, increasing blood flow, making muscles more efficient, and speeding recovery by lowering inflammation. These benefits can not only be experienced by athletes, but by anyone who wants to feel and perform better in any aspect of their lives.

Thought this was timely with this thread ongoing:

I reviewed his twitter account and my first take is this guy repeats himself a lot, I suppose that is good on some level.  Second, it looks like he works for the meat industry because he pushes some specific products, he loves salt, and he is anti-whole grains and I would like to hear more about that.  Other than what you posted (and I quoted) I think he gives out a lot of good info.  I would like to see him and a "plant based" expert have an honest discussion on meat vs. plants.  His meat affinity is the one thing that jumps out at me and something I don't see any detail on.

He drives me nuts, actually. I just thought it was funny given this thread.

I would check out Max Lugavere who I referenced earlier. He has his own pod, but has also been on Joe Rogan a couple times.

Reading his twitter account made me a little nutty too, lol.  And yes, very funny which is why I responded to your post the way I did.

I have checked out Max (thanks to you) and he is on my short list to explore more.

Also everyone, bug is really smart when it comes to most things (not that is a not a slight) and I personally put a lot of stock in anything he has to say on a topic.  I wish I could tell all of you more about bug but just suffice to say he is a high achiever.

My bottom line is that I eat what I want and like.  Some of it is actually healthy - Asparagus, Brussel Sprouts, Salads, Spinich Salads, etc..   Drinking 2Liters ($2.78 each) of Diet Coke a day is probably not doing me any favors, but I hate water and really like Diet Coke over ice.

My original point of entering nto the conversation was about visiting the Pyramids which are over 4,000 years old.  Take a long piece of paper and write down 1 to 4,000 and somewhere in there block out 80 years and you will see how short and insignificant your (our) lives are.  Moral of the story is to Enjoy life for the short time we are here.  Why eat that crap if it is only going to prolong your live a few years.  In 100 years, and then in another 1,000 years another group of people will be standing at the base of those same Pyramids, trying to squeeze a few years out of life.
