I have a buddy of mine who coached my oldest son at Highlands and now coaches at NewCath who is telling me this is the year for the Breds.

They will  win a State Championship and if someone named Beechwood gets in their way along the line then sorry about their luck…

Iam going with the Fisheaters in a close one 17-14…

Biggest stat line I'm looking at is Newport's passing attack amassing 345 yards against NCC's defense and the Wildcats scoring 26 points that night.  Put lightly, that doesn't bode well for the B

  • This is a good test for Beechwood prior to the playoffs to see where the offense and defense stands without Berger. Last week I believe the Freshman could have come in and held their own against Newpo

  • I respect Beechwood and NCC as programs.  Do I think NCC could beat Raceland and/or Pikeville, sure it's possible and not a stretch to say so.  I think Beechwood is probably better than Pikeville, but

In all seriousness  I don’t see anyone touching Pikeville.

You maybe right but I have seen some big upsets that should have been sure wins for teams like this. This is why the games are played.

Yeah you are right it would take a huge upset if Pikeville didn’t win it. Anything can happen but I just don’t see it. My Pikeville buddies are telling me this is probably the best defense they think they have ever had if not one of the best. That is including the defense’s the 87-89 Pikeville teams who Three Peated.

I’m not saying NCC isn’t a good team I just don’t think they can beat either Pikeville or Raceland. As in this game I don’t see them beating the Tigers either.

It is difficult to judge how good NCC is. They haven't had a challenging schedule. The Campbell County loss surprised me a bit. Roger Bacon is a nice win but they are a .500 team this year.  This is a big game for NCC in multiple ways. 1) Prove they can hang with a good team and 2) They need the RPI boost if possible to not face Raceland in the semifinals. I think Raceland and Pikeville beat NCC by 3-4 TDs. As @Sweeperboysaid, an upset can happen but having to beat Raceland then Pikeville is virtually impossible for them.

I don't see any way that New Cath could avoid facing either Raceland or Pikeville in the semifinals. They cannot get a big enough RPI boost even if they beat Beechwood to make that happen.

I respect Beechwood and NCC as programs.  Do I think NCC could beat Raceland and/or Pikeville, sure it's possible and not a stretch to say so.  I think Beechwood is probably better than Pikeville, but I could see an argument to the contrary.  I think the State Championship is Pikeville's to lose and if NCC can't, at least, play a close a game with Beechwood, they will not beat Pikeville.  And, to make it even harder on NCC, they will have to play either Pikeville or Raceland in the semi-finals, barring an upset, and then play the other in the State Championship. NCC would have to play, probably, their best two games back-to-back to get the Championship. Not saying it's impossible, but it would be a feat.

Hard for me to overlook the passing yards NCC gave up to Newport. That’s a big question mark. You would have to assume beechwood throws the ball better than the wildcats. With the tigers offense gearing more towards passing it could be a recipe for disaster for the breds come Friday.

Didn’t Pikeville lose significantly to Cov Cath? That in my mind is a big indicator of “touchable”. Cov Cath isn’t Cov Cath from 3-6 years ago.

Nope they lost by 7 points.

I know we have NCC ranked #3 in 1A as the "best of the rest" after Pikeville and Raceland but nothing about NewCath makes me think this game will be anything other than a running clock.

Is there any result by Newport Catholic this week that makes Class 1A a three horse race instead of the suspected two?

Ok that’s fine, I just don’t think a team that lost to 2022 Cov Cath at home is untouchable. It’s not like they lost to St Xavier by 7. Just saying they’re beatable for sure.
