If outscoring your first four opponents 159-14 isn't firing on all cylinders, then I don't know what is. And that's exactly where Beechwood is right now. At 4-0, the Tigers have already taken down teams in 1A, 2A, 5A and 6A. This week they take the short trip down to Park Hills for another 5A competitor in Covington Catholic.

Cov Cath is sitting with a 3-1 record, with three straight wins over Pikeville, Lex Cath, and Dixie Heights. Their only loss came in Week 1 when the Colonels lost their home opener to Elder (OH).

The Colonels offense lost starter Zaccary Roberts at QB early in the game during Week 1, and Evan Pitzer (who had been battling with Roberts for the starting spot) came in to run the offense, and appeared to win over the spot when he was given the following three starts. But after Pitzer went down in the first half on Friday during Cov Cath's 47-14 win over Dixie, Roberts came back in and didn't miss a beat, piling up almost 200 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. After such a successful passing game for the Colonels as they had on Friday night, they will be looking to do some damage on the field by air against a Beechwood defense that has only allowed 201 total yards passing in four games, for an average of 50 yards per game.

Cov Cath's defense is going to have their hands full containing 3rd year starter Mitchell Berger, who's already tallied over 600 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground this season, plus another 127 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving. Wake Forest commit Antonio Robinson, Jr has added in another 128 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving, while Landon Aylor has cranked out just over 100 more yards and 2 TDs on the ground.

It should be a battle on Friday in Park Hills when these two teams face off in the 42nd edition of the series. Cov Cath currently holds the lead with 25 wins to Beechwood's 16. Which team gets to add another notch to their belt?

I was waiting on you @Colonels_Wear_Blueto post this one. This should be one of the better games in the state this year imo. I may be wrong as I have been many times before but I think this will be the first Beechwood back-to-back wins over Cov. Cath. since they won four straight back from 1998-2003.

I certainly think this is as good a chance as any for Beechwood to get back to back wins, yep.

Didn't realize it went back to 1996 for the mini streak there. The KHSAA only went back to 1998. Thanks for sharing.

I played in both the 1983 and 1985 games.  In 1983 the field was very wet and it held down our star (Tim Seaman) but CovCath was probably a little better than us.  In 1985 it was an all out war and the Colonels got us in the end but it was a great game with a huge crowd.

Nothing like CovCath week for Beechwood. ūüôā

Actually we won 8 or 9 straight starting in 1994.

Without watching them play, I think BW probably wins by 10-14. I think their best players (Berger, Robinson and Campbell) are good enough to give them the edge.

However, the case for CCH winning would be:

  1. The best team Beechwood has beaten is Simon Kenton…who had to start a freshman QB after their 4 year, FCS caliber starter went down. I know the final score wasn’t close, but when there is such a difference in player at that position, I don’t take away too much from the score.
  2. Beechwood won last year…but 85% of their offense was accounted for by their 5th year senior, EKU signee at QB and CCH was playing a safety at QB and could not throw the football.
  3. Beechwood is starting a freshman QB. I don’t care how good you are, unless you’re a power 5 level talent, it’s tough to generate a consistent passing game against similarly talented teams at that age. If CCH plays 7 or 8 in the box and dares BW to push the ball down the field on anything that isn’t timing go balls down the sideline, I think they are going to have some success.

This.

If I am CovCath I definitely make Beechwood throw the ball to beat me.
