Daddy Ball Reigns Supreme at Highlands

Last night's game was disappointing to say the least.  I will attempt to summarize my rationale.

Coaching Staff:

Hayden is young, inexperienced and impetuous with his decisions.  Hard to imagine an OC making more rash, emotional, short term decisions that will affect this program (and the young men in it) more negatively in the long term.  His youth and inexperience showed up Saturday.  What has he been doing all Spring and Summer?

Play your best 11 on offense and defense regardless of whether your father coaches.  Bob Sphire needs to end this.  The players know, the other coaches know and the fans know.  Absolutely ridiculous this still goes on at HHS.  Coach Sphire was hired as an "outsider" and that was appealing.  Daddy Ball would FINALLY end.  Clearly it has not. What does it take to get the best 11 on the field?

Head Coach:

You need to coach the coaches as much or more than the players.  You have declared "bigger and stronger" a priority.  The kids have bought in and delivered, yet you don't play the biggest and strongest. The O Line isn't moving people, yet the biggest and strongest aren't even on the field.  Why is that?

If you came to Highlands hoping to find success so your son could take over as coach one day, this isn't how to do it.  He isn't close to being ready for much of anything at this point.  Your positional coaches prioritize their sons over those that should play, and personnel decisions are suspect at best.  What game tape do you watch?

Do better, be better.  You are running the risk of losing this team and the town.

I believe the answer to this may have been that they were preparing for glorified Flag Football, A.K.A. 7 on 7’s.

I did not realize a coach who was on staff last year with a son playing left. And taking into account the player who quit. With that said there are 6 dads of current players on staff. The part that worries me the most is the idea that your son becomes a HHS player and suddenly you’re a coach. Bad precedent to set and clearly isn’t working.

I think I missed one. There are 5. Bryant, Abner, Nevels, Cook and Welch. Wiggins is no longer on staff. Bibb is on staff but his son is not playing. Abner and Cook have Frosh players. I think that covers all of them??

If he was the first choice, then he would have to tell Highlands no?

He did then they circled back to him after Eddie James quit.

Yea Abner has a Freshman player but would of been on staff regardless. He has been coaching 8th grade Football for a very long time in Ft Thomas well before he had a son and will be coaching long after his son is gone if he has the chance. Regardless he will be coaching Football in Ft Thomas whether he has a son playing or not at any level. I guess that's the definition of daddy ball.

This is correct. Sphire was essentially Wes Caldwell's first phone call once Weinrich was out, and Sphire turned it down. Sphire had been Caldwell's head coach when he was playing high school football at Lex Cath.

Then Highlands ended up hiring Eddie James, and Eddie James headed back to Franklin County shortly after being announced as the head coach at Highlands. At that point, Caldwell reached back out to Sphire while there was also some wheeling and dealing taking place at the school to see if they could figure out how to make things work to hire Chris Wolfe.

The school was able to allocate more money for the job, but Wolfe wanted the AD job in addition to head football coach, so at the end of the day, the Wolfe hire was just going nowhere with Caldwell. Sphire accepted the job with the new salary based on the newly allocated funds.

If they didn’t hire those dads, would they have found enough coaches or other people to fill those roles those dads have? A lot of people act like there are a lot of good assistant coaches out there that are easy to go get. The fact of the matter is there is not many people getting into coaching these days, because of the time commitment and because of all the constant criticism no matter what a coach does.  Many schools seem to have hard time finding coaches, and have to hire either young inexperienced coaches, or dads of players to fill a staff.

So before people complain about daddy ball, which definitely can be an issue. It is not like there are a lot of coaches out there anymore that are coaching just to coach. Which the ones who do have experience and are coaching just to coach and don’t have kids involved. Most of them are already at other schools. So it is not so simple to just fill a staff with quality coaches with experience and no players on the team like many seem to think. Sometimes programs have to hire a father, and hope they coach the right way and don’t show favoritism.

Everything sounds right except the AD job. That was never part of Wolfe’s deal. Trust me. Wolfe just wanted to Coach Football and study Film all day. that's far from wanting the AD job. I get that you have some sources but Ft Thomas is also a very small town and everyone knows everybody’s business. I have heard it right from the people that were trying to get Chris Wolfe to Ft Thomas. Wherever you heard the AD job rumor is False. But your post is almost spot on.

Fair enough.

My grand point in the grand scheme, though, was that Sphire definitely wasn't an afterthought hire, even though he may logically seem that way as the literal second man hired for the job.

I agree he was the 1st phone call. Money wasn’t there then but was there after the long negotiations with Chris Wolfe. The Job was Wolfes for about 2 weeks. During those 2 weeks Male figured out how to keep Chris Wolfe. Enter Bob Sphire.

There are 7-8 dads of current players in the program on staff. As to whether or not they coach their son’s position, I honestly can’t say to that as I don’t know for sure and I don’t want to put forth false information.

I was the one on here months ago that expressed concern over the trend of dads being on staff and was concerned about the sheer number of dads on staff. I was basically told I didn’t know what I was talking about by multiple posters.

The point is that no matter how much you try to put any bias aside, it is hard to not fight for your son and want him to play over someone who is not your son.

There are dads on this staff but they are grinding and will continue to do so. They are putting the work in places that are needed and are building this program up. They don't pick and choose which games they come to and will practice each day and most likely have the first undefeated Freshmen season in some time and that did not happen with the past regime.

Brady Dowling actually did a outstanding job. Just couldn’t figure out how to Beat Colonels!? Actually I think he got them once.

So Highlands hired a guy that turned them down initially? That’s actually worse, IMO.
