I hope CovCath pulls off the upset!

Elder won 28-6 last year so maybe similar to that this year or maybe closer game since Elder offense maybe not as good as last year.

35-10 Elder maybe.  Hope the Colonels learned a lot this week and Coach E makes some adjustments.

For a second straight year, the Colonels are starting off their season with a stout challenge, facing off against the Elder Panthers out of Cincinnati's GCL South division. Last year the Colonels faced the Panthers at The Pit, and were sent back to Park Hills on the short end of a 28-6 final score.

The Colonels will be working again this season to break in a new starting quarterback. Senior Zac Roberts and junior Evan Pitzer have been vying for the job, and after Friday's scrimmage against Simon Kenton, it appears that Pitzer is more than likely to get the nod. Owen Leen, a junior, looks to be the go-to ball carrier for the Colonels' offense. Most of the receiving corps was lost to graduation and transfer, so starting off, Coach Eviston is likely to leaning heavily on junior Willie Rodriguez, junior Braylon Miller, and sophomore Oliver Link to lead the receiving corps early on as the season develops. The offensive line will be anchored by seniors Aiden Jones, Thomas Schramm, Max Lawrie and Travis Stewart.

On the defensive side, Army commit Aiden Jones will be leading the charge from his spot at linebacker, joined by returning starter Willie Rodriguez at outside linebacker. Zac Roberts and Blake Folke are both likely to appear on the linebacking corps. Defensive back Oliver Bent and D-end Max Lawrie were both major contributors last season, as were juniors Owen Leen and Braylon Miller at defensive back.

Friday's game between Cov Cath and Elder will be the 7th meeting between these two squads, and the first time the Colonels have ever hosted the Panthers. The series record is currently 6-0 in Elder's favor.

Heading into his 26th season as head coach of the Panthers, Coach Doug Ramsey will be also be replace a starting quarterback this season. Coach Ramsey reported to the Enquirer in July that he had four players competing for the starting spot, with the apparent leaders being seniors Ben Schosterm who was the Panthers' backup QB in '21, and Jack Reuter, who transferred to Elder last year as a junior after starting at QB for two years at Walnut Hills High School. Reuter missed the season last year due to a knee injury. The Panthers also return Luke Flowers as a senior RB/WR. Flowers carried 85 times for 341 yds and 6 TDs last season (4 yards per carry), and had 32 receptions for 230 yds (7 yards per reception). He tallied 55 total offensive yards and 1 touchdown against the Colonels last year. Receivers Carson Browne and Justin Re will be leading Elder's receiving corps, with Browne providing a nice 6'8" target downfield, and 6'1" Re who dominates Ohio track meets as a 100m & 200m sprinter.

Elder's defense is led by seniors safety Zack Gutekunst and linebacker Samari Freeman, who accounted for 88 tackles last season. Gutekunst tallied two interceptions and a sack last year in the Cov Cath game. Samari will be joined by senior LB Brad Hoernschemeyer and sophomore LB Maddox Arnold to fill out the center of the Panther D. Arnold saw limited varsity time at linebacker last year as a freshman, but after gaining attention from UC and Ohio State in the camp circuit during the off season, Maddox is likely to turn into a heck of a competitor as he fills out.

Kickoff for Friday's game is set for 7:00pm in Park Hills.

The Colonel Athletic Network will be providing free streaming audio for the game, and $10 pay-per-view livestream video for the game, available on the Colonel Athletic Network page on the Cov Cath website. The broadcast will begin about 10 minutes before the game. Livestream Season Passes are also available for the Colonels' home schedule for $35 on the website.

If you aren't able to watch it live, it looks like the replay will be on Star64 in the Cincinnati area the next day at 2pm.
