How many Football players are running Track?

How many football players run track from your school? Any stand outs?

We have several at St. X. I know Male has several as well. Some of our guys are factors and other guys are just there to improve their speed. Our best shot putter is Ashton Jones who plays football and has thrown 48 feet this year and only a sophomore. I think track is a great sport for football players since track workouts will benefit them on the football field.

Ryle has several players from incoming freshman to varsity starters participating. Kaeden Gardner has is one of the top 5 high jumpers in the state, qbs Logan Verax and brother Nate an incoming freshman are competing well in the 4 x 100, 4 x200, 100m and 200m with left tackle Drew Dickerson consistently placing in the discus and shot.

Specifically running track? Or any track and field events?

HHS has always had a lot of football players doing track and field and a lot have been pretty successful; a lot of the relay sprint teams are formed from football players. Back when I was in school a lot more did track just to get out of Coach Mueller's football winter weights haha.

I haven't had a look at the track team this year at Cov Cath, but there are usually at least a few guys that run track from the football team. Last year WR/DB Zion Mason was a member of the Colonels' 4x100m relay team that finished 2nd in the 3A State Meet, as well as the 4x200m relay team that finished 9th in the 3A State Meet. He's a current junior, and I'd assume he's running track again this year.

Jullian Seymour from the Green Co. program is a top runner in the 400 m also part of a top 4x2 and 4x4 relay team. He's a RB. Kelson McKinney from the Green Co. program is a top discus and shot in the state. Gage Bale from the Green Co. program. The Smith's from the Taylor Co. program both run.

Eastern Relays are thus weekend.  Any locals qualify? This is probably the most competitive meet of the year from what I've heard. Love watching the progression of the athletes.

As a track coach, there is no doubt there is a benefit to the player by participating in track and field.  Simply look at the numbers.  A huge majority of successful football players participated in T&F in High School.  At every level.  My thought is that you cannot be faster if you do not work to be faster.  Participating in Track teaches proper running form, how to explode out of blocks, how to be quick on your feet in the Shot and Discus.  Sprinters make great Long Jumpers.

The hard part right now is for the players to understand that participating in track is helping to prepare them for the fall.  Everyone says they want to get stronger and faster.  So they lift weights.  But they do not work specifically on running.  Personal Trainers are now the thing.  I get told that they run in workouts.  It is not the same.  I have had several football players in the past say they are really fast and I finally convince them to come out.  When they compete, they find that it is a whole another world on the track.  My HS fellow coaches are encouraging them to do so.

College coaches want Athletes.  One of the first questions asked of a HS coach is "What other sports do they participate in?"  They are looking for athletes who can go to a different sport, learn that sport and be competitive in that sport.  Learning to be comfortable when they are uncomfortable.  This certainly benefits the other sports.

I know that many kids are successful by just competing in one sport.  And that is great.  But I will always be behind the fact that HS kids should participate in as many sports as possible.  My son has competed in three Varsity sports this season.  He will go on to play college football in the fall.  All three sports are helping him to continue to develop all aspects of his body.  And he has found that he is having good success in T&F.

Lastly so many kids are wearing out their bodies by participating in just one sport.  Read articles from former MLB players who are totally against kids playing baseball all year long.  Or NFL players who say track was very important to their success.  To be honest, the majority of kids who have had T&F success, participated in another sport.  Developed athletes are what we all want on our teams.

All coaches need to carefully consider allowing their players to be allowed to participate in another sport.  I personally want to provide better athletes to my school's other teams. I want them to be successful.  Everyone benefits that way.  Good Luck to all coaches out there!!!

We have nearly 20 football guys running track. I know that the other night they had 2 4x100 teams in football players alone. One of those teams won. We also have LBs and lineman that throw. I think it is super important for these kids to be kids and play whatever sport they want. Our wrestling team, basketball team, baseball team and track are full of our kids. Our OC and DC are the track coaches now. It makes Spring football a little different, but it has been well worth it. When they are all together, we see the difference. We also have made sure that the running form that lends itself to track makes it to football. Track is great..

That is great to hear coach, I am excited about Station football.

Speed kills and only way to truly improve is to continue to run.

Kaden Gardner of Ryle tied the Eastern Relay record in the high jump at 6'8" also setting the Ryle record again that height was the best jump in the state so far. Ryle 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams qualified and ran in the event  each with 3 football players as well as Gabe Savage throwing and a qualifier in the 100m and 200m.
